Driveshaft binding in to the rear differential

Hi guys,

Recently I have noticed when taking off from being stopped I hear a cling cling cling from the back end. Got the gf to slowly drive forwards and then reverse a bunch so I could try and find the problem. I see that it appears the driveshaft is binding where it meets the rear diff. The noise/binding is particularly bad when reversing from stop. It sounds bad.

I changed out the rear diff fluid. Greased the zirk fittings on the drive shaft and no luck. I noticed that one of the zirk fittings most close to the rear diff took a hell of a lot of grease to fill.

I do also get some vibration problems and am guessing it is related. Any help on how to fix this or things to try would be much appreciated.

binding? do you have a lift on it causeing the angle to be out of whack? maybe replace the ujoint? worth a 20$ xperiment

Just have 5100s at middle setting upfront to level. Back is four leaf pack.

Did you ever figure it out? I haven't been able to take a look at my truck but occasionally switching from drive to reverse, reverse from a stop, or even shifting while moving I get a cling cling noise or sometimes a loud clunk. It's been real intermittent though and I can't consistently replicate it though. Could you elaborate more about what's binding? I've got longer shackles on the rear and pretty sure stock leafs.

Hey buddy,

Yes the problem was with the rear u-joints. Replaced them and perfect. No more clinging and binding. When I did a check of them mounted they seem find and it wasn't until I removed them I could see they were shot.

Sounds like your problem is transmission? If you only get the clings when changing gears. With bad ujoints you can get vibes, constant grinding sound, pinging when starting or reversing from stop (basically the roller pins aren't free rolling anymore rather they are jamming).

Have someone drive your truck slowly forwards then reverse and stare at your propeller shalf (Drive shaft). If it is binding and skipping you know its ujoints. If smooth, look somewhere else.
