Does 3.4L V-6 have timing gears, or chain?

Does the 2000 4Runner’s 3.4L V-6 have timing gears, like FZJ80’s 4.5L inline 6, or does it have timing chain or belt?

If chain or belt, what is interval to replace it?

How To Tell

Usually the way to tell if you have a timing belt or a timing chain is by the cover. If it has a chain it has a metal cover and if it has a belt it will have a plastic cover.

The 3.4l is a non interfearence type engine. You dont really HAVE to change the belt. If it breaks, just center the cams and crank with a new belt.

Of course being stuck on the side of the road because you were too cheap to change out a $30 belt would suck!
