depress the clutch to shift to 4wd?
 

sometimes i do and it seems to engage smoother than if i do not, but i would think that it shouldn't make much difference because people with auto trannys have no clutch to use. Is it necessary to use the clutch if so equipped?

I havn't tried (w/o depressing the clutch), but I think the manual does say you shouldn't need to depress the clutch

You don't need to depress the clutch to engage 4wd but if your trying to shift on the fly you have to remeber that the driveline is 'under load'. That is to say the tranny, transfer case, shafts etc. are all spinning and tight. When you engage the clutch you momentarily "unload" the driveline and make it easier for the gear teeth to mate making for a smoother shift. similarly when shifting out of 4wd you may have to clutch and or tap the brakes to unload the driveline and get the gears to release again. This is why the 4wd idiot light will sometimes stay on even after you shiufted to 2wd. hope this helps cheers :drink: Aviator

No, you shouldn't need to push the clutch in. Just take your foot off the gas a bit to reduce driveline tension.

I usually do it just naturally, dont really think about it. It cant really hurt anything by doing it, so why not?

You have to stop to shift into 4 lo so it is necessray then, or at least have it out of gear. I have shifted into 4hi at 45mph, I just let off the gas.

I always depress the clutch. Its just habit.

Depends on the situation, but I either let off the gas or press in the clutch. Just goes in easier with the clutch pushed in.
