Hello everyone,

I have a 2000 4Runner V6 2WD with 123k miles.
I'm getting my Automatic Transmission Serviced and Rear Differential fluid changed.
I got an estimate that I think is the best pricing around my area in Cupertino, CA.
Automatic Transmission Service (Oil, Filter, and Gasket)= $100
Rear Diff oil changed= $50

How bout everyone else in their area?

don't know about the tranny stuff... But save that $50 and change that differential fluid yourself! its super easy....

Roger that, JohnRaven, but the problem is that it's very convenient today since I'm going to tend to some business at a campus near by. For what I recall, Oil usually costs like $40 total? or $45, since it's not cheap stuff and the rear diff needs a good amount of the oil... Thanks JohnRaven

if its only 50 and they are going to put synthetic in the back i would just let them do it.

It was kind of a pain in the ass for me to do the rear diff ($30 for synthetic oil because it lasts longer) and I had to order the gaskets. Overall it was like $40 to change my self...

Now if they don't put synthetic in i would just do it yourself. (I doubt they will, that is probably extra money). Regular gear oil is like half the cost.

Don't know much about the tranny. From what I hear you pretty much have to have them do it if you want all the fluid changed.

I think that thats a fair price...However..I would save the money and do both myself, all u need is a 5 gal bucket, tranny fluid, and a filter/gasket kit. In my case, a tranny service and diff service cost me approx $60.

I worked for a Toyota dealer in CO. for two years wrenching. Never changed the filter in a transmission, flushed a good amount but usually just did a drain and fill. If you do it every 15k or so the tranny should last as long as a Toyota should. Diff service is high at $50, synthetic oil should be around $10 bucks a qt. Bulk 80/90 is what they will most likely use on your diff and if they pay more than $2 a qt. they need to find a new supplier. After all that I bet you they won't even change the plug gaskets either.

50 bucks for the rear diff, are you kidding me. Just go to autozone get some synthetic gear oil, its like 6-9 bucks a qt, depending on what you get. Its really easy to do, just cut some plastic tube (like surgical tube) and stick one end of the gear lube bottle and squeeze.

Thats high for synthetic at Azone. Severe gear is only $7 and change a quart at perferred customer cost. Also if you jack the rear up by the hitch till the tires start to come off the ground it will give you a little more room to maneuver the bottle around. I would try and wait and do it yourself neither job is hard at all.

If that is $100 for the BG power flush and fill, that is a good deal.
If it is just a drain and refill, not so much.
$50 for the rear diff is not.

The BG process is superior to just draining and filling.

I just did a transmission flush at my dealership a few weeks ago for $120. The rear diff (and xfer case), I did myself. It is SUPER easy. Just make sure to spray some PB Blaster on both fill and drain bolts. I had to use a breaker bar for the bolts, but they came off on the first pull without too much effort. Make sure to get a 6pt socket (instead of the 12pt) from Autozone or any auto part stores. I called Sears, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. and none had any, except the auto part stores.

For filling, I just bought this thing that screws onto the gear oil bottle (universal tip) with a long tube. Easy to use.

While you are at it, replace the diff drain and fill plugs with Toyota part # 90341-18021. FWIW, the drain and fill for a manual tranny (W56, R151, R150) will also accept these plugs. Not sure about the IFS front fill.

Never round off a drain or fill again. Just use a 10mm allen drive.
