Comment on Silverstars

I took my truck up to our family farm this weekend and I can say without a doubt they do shine bright. It has been kinda hard to tell if they were any different in the city, I like the whiter light better regardless, but the brights on in the woods were lighting up everything. Anyone considering them, I'd recommend them.

Scofco 03-30-2004 04:02 PM

My only beef is that they die faster than my old headlights.
It's worth it though for how clean looking they are. Hated seeing that ugly yellowish color for headlights.

ElwayLite 03-30-2004 04:10 PM

Out of curiosity, how long did you get out of your first set?

Scofco 03-30-2004 04:23 PM

Not sure.
I bought the runner in November I think it was, put the lights in about a month later, and replaced my 2nd burnt out one about a month ago.
So only 3 months. Give or take.

Fink 03-30-2004 04:24 PM

My only beef is the weakness of them in really dark conditions (not being able to use high beams) and in rainy/snowy conditions...oh wait, I've got fog lights now...nevermind!

Soon I'll be able to join the elite fog light club!
Soon as my darn rack gets here. What gives yoda-g2? :P

ElwayLite 03-30-2004 05:04 PM

Yeah, I want some hella 500's before too much longer.

sick4runner 03-30-2004 06:00 PM

three months....wow.... i have had mine for over a year, no problems, with plenty of use too! is there a reason for the major varience?

WolfpackTLC 03-30-2004 06:36 PM

Silverstars are liscenced by Osram Co. to Sylvania. The Sylvania bulbs are inferior to the Osram bulbs in every way, shape, and form, including construction quality. Build variences are so high w/ the Sylvania bulbs, that you get 2 months to 2 years. My first set lasted 6 months. Second set, 3 months... the current set has been in for a year, but they're Osram bulbs that I ordered, not Sylvania bulbs from my local parts house. The Osram's also look MUCH better than the Sylvania's. And NO, I'm not touching the bulbs, my housings are clean, and I wear gloves and wipe down the bulbs w/ denatured alcohol if they get contaminated prior to install. It's a crap shoot. Personally, I'm more impressed (for the $$$ ) with my John Deere HIR bulbs. You guys should check em' out. $30 or so from your local John Deere dealer...

Actually I had totally opposite experience. I've tried Osram bulbs that I ordered from UK and to be honest, I couldn't tell a bit difference between them and my '01 stock bulbs. Maybe 10% or so brighther, but that's about it.

On the other hand, Sylvanias are way better in my opinion. They're whiter, brighter and last longer. I'm on the original set after 1.5 years, and that's considering the fact I have DRL all the time.

Nothing runs like a DEERE! Haha. What are HIRs? are they driving/fog lights or are they bulbs? and just how good are they?

Godzilla 03-30-2004 08:39 PM

To an earlier comment by 4x4Fink. Is there no highbeam with those lights?

ElwayLite 03-31-2004 04:36 AM

Mine have a high beam and they are BRIGHT.

WolfpackTLC 03-31-2004 05:54 AM

HIR is a new technology that uses coatings to reflect and absorb the infrared heat given off by the bulb to effectively heat the filament up more, thus, improving the Kelvin reading, thereby making the light brighter. They work, and the $30 or so spent @ John Deere is better than the $100 or so that IPF wants for the same technology.

Ducky 03-31-2004 06:07 AM

It vary's on how much you use them, im about at a year and no problems. I know some ppl with longer usage... I did disable my DRL's and that might be cutting down the wear.

Wolf,
I see with your Cruiser you running the HIR's but are you using them in the runner?

Joe 03-31-2004 09:20 AM

Check out this website:

Osram +50 is a nice upgrade from stock - The bulbs last approximately 10 to 14 months depending on how much night driving you do. The low beam will probably burn out first - that's been my experience anyway.

X-AWDriver 03-31-2004 11:09 AM

Mine have been going for almost 7 months now. (knock on wood)

Lifer 03-31-2004 12:30 PM

O.K. I'm interested in the HIR's or the Silverstars, my question is do they make corners bulbs to match.
I have clear corner lenses and the color difference from the corners to the headlights drives me nuts.
