clutch problem

my truck started to get hard to shift, and there was too much freeplay in the clutch pedal, so i adjusted the freeplay by backing out the pushrod like it says in my manual. after a couple months it started to happen again. ive adjusted it a couple times now and i went to adjust it again, and ive run out of adjustment. what would cause this problem? (i dont see any fluid leaks, theres still plenty of fluid, im hoping its not a bad master cylinder!)

what truck do u have a little more info will help

punkbek3886 10-16-2005 05:25 PM

my bad, its a 94 4x4 p/u 22re 5sp

Elton 10-16-2005 05:29 PM

maybe ur clutch is goinig bad how many miles u got

punkbek3886 10-16-2005 08:47 PM

i dont know how many miles the clutch has on it, but its not slipping. the problem is it wont disengage, the pedal has too much endplay (unused stoke) and every time i adjust it, it happens again

There may be a leak somewhere that you aren't seeing (1st step). Then it could be the MC (not to expensive or hard to replace so don't sweat it). Finally if everything checks out, then you could prolly figure that its the pressure plate (clutch) fingers wearing; although unlikely as its prolly something to do with the fluid/MC/lines...

alright, thanks for the help. im gonna have to spend some time under the truck to try to find a leak. i havent checked the slave cylinder yet. while im at it ill prolly bleed the system to see if it makes a difference.

aren't there adjustments at the pedal that can be made too? my 92 p/u adjusts this way.

punkbek3886 10-17-2005 12:46 PM

yeah, like i said, i adjusted it a few times now and i cant adjust it any more, the pushrod will fall out of the clevis attaching it to the pedal.

My last 4Runner was 1990. That year 4Runner has a problem with the clutch pedal mounting bracket on the inside firewall. The metal bracket has a weak point that rips. Once the bracket begins to tear the clutch pedal won't fully disengage the clutch. Only fix is to replace the bracket. I had to do this twice on my 90. Once at around 100K miles and then again at around 230K.

I have no idea if your model year has a similar problem. The bracket would tear near the upper left, next to the hole the clutch master cylinder goes through. You can see the bracket flex if it's torn when pushing on the clutch pedal with your hand.

Hopefully it's just a master cylinder problem...much easier to fix. :-)

thanks, ill look for that. im going to jacksonville tomorrow to pick up rims/tires, and im going to change the oil after that, so ill look for leaks/torn brackets then.

update: i tried to bleed the system today and after my friend depressed the clutch pedal for the first time it wouldnt come back up. now there is no pedal pressure whatsoever. i tried pumping it, the level of the fluid in the reservoir doesnt change. it seems like the master cylinder is not drawing in new fluid. im guessing this could be why the clutch slowly lost pressure until i readjusted the linkage? the master cylinder isnt leaking at all, should i just replace it, or is there something im missing?

man i was having the same problem s you had and couldnt figure it out for a week, looked for cracks on the bracket and couldnt find any. had a friend look a tthe bracket and he noticed this huge tear on it
make sure it s not your bracket

clutch bracket

I had the EXACT same problems with my 91 about 2 yeara ago. hard to get into 1st and third gear for about a month every time i pushed in the clutch to shift i would hear a pop. sitting at a stop lite one day i pushed in the clutch to shift into 1st and take off and heard a very loud pop and could not get it into any gear. pedal felt normal. pushed into a gas station out of traffic had my friend push in cluth the linkage (slave cylinder)on the side of transmision was moving fine. So I stuck my head under dash at the pedals having no idea what to look for as i pushed clutch pedal in with my hand there was a big metal bracket that goes around all three pedals that had a 2 inch break in it and was seperated due to the stiffness of pushing in the clutch. called toyta to get a new one they wanted 638 dollars for a new one. it is a bitch to get out but i did it in about 1 1/2 hours and re welded crack its been fine so far driven every day. let me know if u need help gettin it out.

thanks for the suggestions but i fixed my problem, it was the master cylinder, its shifting like new now.
