Clean engine

Is there a link or a post with some step-by-step things I should/shouldn't do when cleaning my engine? I just picked up my '024Runner, the engine is pretty clean, just want to do a good once-over and keep it in good shape. Do I need to cover certain parts with a plastic bag, be absolutely sure I don't get any water on this or that?

Also what can I use to clean it with? (Simple Green, degreaser, etc.)

Thanks for your help!

its real easy to do first let the engine cool and dont do it hot then disconnect the battery then remove the air filter stick some rags down inside of it then cover the alternator and the fuse box and more bags will never hurt then lightly rinse the engine then use simple green max or castrol super clean use a good bit of it let it stand for 10-15mins and then hose it down real good and i found it best to use a leaf blower to speed up the drying process let it sit for a while then reconnect the battery and start it up and let it warm up ive done it once and awhile and never had anything bad happen

i've done the clean before...i pretty much just followed the instructions on the can, that is that it's specifically for that job. get the engine cleaner stuff and when ur washing the stuff off use really really low pressure, just rinse it off...did it on my jeep once, so definately can do it on a yota...just be careful where the water goes and ur fine...

Another Tip....
(from the stupid one here on YT)

Don't do it when its suppose to get to near or blow freezing that night...

I ended up cleaning my engine bay and that night it got cold...
Went to start the next morning and my starter had frozen and took a while to warm it and free it up...

Man, I gotta use more common sense more often...
