cigarette lighter problems
I did a search on this already but found nothing.
I bought my 98' runner used and found out that there is no wire connecting to the cigarette lighter at all. I have an alarm and i think it was jerry rigged from my lighter. Which is the fuse for the lighter? How do i connect to the fuse panel? What size fuse and wire do i use?:help: |
Are you saying there's not harness plugged into the back of the lighter? Right after i got my 98, i unplugged my radar detector, and the entire plug pulled out of the dash. This caused the harness to come unplugged from the lighter. I took out the center of the dash and found the harness dangling and plugged it back in.
Don't know if this is your problem, but it may have happened to the person who had it before you, and they may have been too lazy to fix it. May be something to check before you buy the stuff to hardwire. |
Cubera,
As Drummerhead said, its a plug/harness (should be grey in color). I highly doubt that an alarm installer would use it for the 12v power as it is a switched power wire (off when key is out of ignition, on only when ignition is engaged). therefore, it would be a useless alarm! :) also, if your 12v accessory plug doesnt work, try splaying the metal tabs inwards so there is a better connection w/ your accessories. over time, those plugs start to bend the tabs/flatten them. bob |
Drumhead and Bob.
You guys totally rule. You guys fixed my lighter dudes. I don't know what i would have done without you guys. Thanx a bunch. It was just like you both said. The lighter power wire harness and the illumination harness were both dangling on my floorboard. Plugged em' back in and wala-presto. One more question- which is the fuse for the lighter? Will this plug handle a 13" television that goes ac/dc? Yotatech rocks. :bigok: |

Cubera,
The fuse for the 12v accessory plug is actually in the grey harness. Sorry, I don't know the size. Whats the watts/volts on your 13" tv? It *might* work if the TV is designed to pull a low current, but if not, you're gonna have to do something like this: http://www.4runners.org/articles/dist Now if you do this, you won't have to ever ask that question. And if my instructions meet to your satisfaction and you perform the mod successfully, you better take me fishing on your boat if I ever make it to FL! :D Bob |
The tv is an 70 watt-12/120volt ac/dc unit that came with a cigarette lighter adapter.
It's worked fine in a 99blazer i used to have but we used it for the first time in the runner and it worked fine on the highway till i was sitting in traffic at night and my ride shut off completely. Like an alternator failure. I keyed it back on and disconnected the tv. The cigarette lighter plug extension which was ran 10 ft to the rear accessory plug was superhot. I stalled one more time even though it was disconnected 10 minutes later at a McDonalds drive thru. I then had alternator and battery checked at auto part store. And They said it tested good. Mod. or no mod. Ya i'll take you fishing!Thanx for the help fellas. |
Cubera,
Glad you got your lighter fixed. On the TV I would just install an inverter (approx. $40 at Best Buy etc...) and run the TV A/C off of it. The lighter plug in the cargo area is a perfect place to hook up the inverter and it leaves your front outlet open. Good Luck, and enjoy the runner. |
Does anyone know how to get the lighter to STAY in the dash. Mine keeps pulling out like DrumheadAR said. I tried to clip it back it but it didn't fix it...:dunno:
