Chips on sliders
 

Yeah, yeah, I know, they are going to get scraped and damaged by taking it off road, and that is what happened at Greenwater a few Saturdays ago.

Here is a crude drawing.
This picture though does not show the damage. It is for referance only.

I don't think I have real "arrows" in the program I use to work with pics, so I free hand drew them.

Both sliderz received extensive chips that went clear through the paint on the sliderz in those tow places, and rust had already formed.
I touched them up earlier today by masking off parts of the rig.

You can still see the chip dimples if you look close, but that is not what worries me.
They will get chipped again in the same spot as rocks get thrown up from the tires.

The paint I used was the same stuff they used on the sliderz too.
It's Hammerite Hammered finish. You can paint right over rust with it too, just like POR 15.
I lightly sanded the area first, then used Griot's Paint Prep to clean the surface before shooting the areas.

I was thinking of using 3M clear tape to just wrap around those 4" tubes there, or maybe even going with what Dok used on his sliderz.

I have used neither in the past, and wondering which is going to hold up better for rocks flying up in those two areas.
Those two areas where I drew the arrows seemed to be the only place the chips formed.

Spring for both.

Actually I think I am going to use the clear stuff for those areas that were peckered a week back, and use the sand paper type stuff for maybe the tops like Dok did.

Dok, is your 3M sand paper the same? This is 2" wide, by 15' feet.

I like the idea that Dok used. That way you can possibly use it as a step and don't have to worry about slipping off and banging the good ol' shin bone! I would give that a try first. I mean if you don't like it, just take it off and try something else. That will somewhat protect it and if that stuff gets torn up, it is alot easier to replace that than go through the whole painting procedure again! Let us know what you do! :fireman:

You should be able to see the clear tape on those cross section tubes.

I cut each piece 5" long and this wraps around the circumference perfectly.
And they are 3 5/8" wide, and fit in pretty good between the tubes.
They don't have to be perfect, but it will protect that area that got hammered last week.

A little too warm out now to be doing the tops of the tubes with the 3M sand paper stuff.
I'll get that tomorrow.
I already measured it, and can cut them out tonight, and putting them on should not be hard, as long as I can align them up OK.
I see by Dok's write-up he had help putting those sections on to make it more even.

PS, I will also cut some more of the clear stuff abut the size of a quarter, and put it on the back of that tube you can see in the first pic.

I just got done putting on the 3M sand paper tape stuff, and it turned out pretty good.
I had to peel it off a few times, and it did not peel any paint which is good in my book.

They are not on super perfect, but they still look pretty good for eye balling it.

I just started at one end and then gently pushed down along the top to try and get it even before I rolled the edges down the sides.

He he he, I'll have to see how they hold up.
I think eventually the paint on top would wear down as I stand on them when I wash the rig to get to the roof.

I almost wish the stuff was 5" wide. That is the circumference of the tubes, and would even cover the bottom from chips.

Dang, I hope that other server comes back up so your CB pics will work.
May have to move them tomorrow if it's still down.

Mine are powder coated and don't chip. Rocks do scratch some coating off but they must be big deep scratches.

I was toying with the idea of powder coating them in the future Steve, but I did not know how it would hold up.

I must admit the Smitty's I had on there held up really well, and I don't have any rock chips on them at all.
The ARB is holding up just as well.

I just may get them coated in the future, and put that strip along the top still.
That makes for a nice non slip surface.
