Changing tire size. Stock 31's to All terrain 32's. Do I need to re-gear???
01' 4x4 Sr5 auto tranny Taco (ext cab) w/3 inch body lift (I don't wanna hear it). I don't really do any hardcore wheeling, mostly street driving. My friend was gonna junk this 4-runner thats been sittin on his property. It has perfectly good Expensive 32" inch all terrains on it, and I'll get em for free. My buddy who does a lot of Toyota wheeling and has a lot of knowledge of these tells me if I went to 33's i should re-gear, but 32's should be alright. Whats all your opinions????

if they're free, then there's no harm in at least trying them
you could always keep them around until you have the extra cash to regear, especially since he's gonna toss them out anyways.

You don't ever HAVE to regear you're just going to lose alot of power and the larger the tire the more the loss, if its a skinny 32 which I doubt, its probably 32x11.50 cause thats probably the most common BFG 32" size, it wouldn't be too bad. However even with the 32x11.50 you'll be fine and it won't be much loss since its only an inch or so in both width and height. Some people run 33x10.50's without regearing and are happy...
Also, if the 4runner has been sitting for a while make sure the tires are still good because they may be rotted or have flat spots from sitting on the same spot for so long...

I can't give any specific numbers on the power loss but I don't think it will be huge...and as for checking the tires just look at them closely and see if there is any cracking or if the sidewall looks like it is ripping or falling apart, if the tires were sitting with quite a bit of pressure they are most likely fine, but, you may wanna wait for someone that has more knowledge on tires than I do, I just know that they go bad after sitting for a while...

2 years sitting outside, they are probably bad. Were they Flat? If so, they most likely will thump while driving. Any serious damage will probably be obvious IE: cracking of the sidewalls & between the tread blocks.
Be careful if you try them. Check them daily as the damage may not show until they have been heat cycled a few times.

I went from 235/75R15 (29") to 265/75R16 (32") in my 4Runner and there was a bit of a decrease in acceleration. It was a bt annoying at first but after a few weeks I got used to it and now it seems normal. 31" to 32" isn't much of a change, you probably won't even notice.
