Canadian? Like 4x4ing? Are you a 4 cyl guy?
I gotta be honest. When I look at the Toyota trucks produced from 89-95 (22RE) and the 96-04 Tacoma (2.7 non VVT-i), I honestly think I would prefer the 4 cyl. I'm not a huge power monger, I don't need to race anyone, and I appreciate the gas mileage. Plus I appreciate the lesser cost of parts and often repair for 4 cyl engines. PLus I'm not doing any huge towing or huge hauling. I'm a 4 cyl guy through and through.
Interestingly enough, the new 2005 Toyota Tacoma's unlike previous years in their 89-95 trucks and 96-04 Tacoma's, no longer offer a 4 cyl 4x4 access (or extended) cab (they only have the 4 cyl in the 4x2 Access Cab '05 Tacoma), but only the V6, in Canada.
I guess I can understand that in some respects, as the 05 Tacoma V6 Access Cab 4x4 with Air Conditioning is $140 cheaper than the 04 Tacoma Extended cab with the 4 cyl (and no A/C) as well as you only really ever see V6 96-04 Tacoma's in Canada anyways (I'd say from my expierience out of all 4x4's, the 2.7 Tacoma's represent about 10% of all 4x4 ext'd cab's in Canada).
The base for these vehicles is at about $29,300 give or take (I think it's $29,240 for the 05 V6 and $29,400 for the '04 4 cyl), obviously plus taxes, etc. I would speculate that with the strong Canadian dollar, if there was a 4 cyl available, and if you compare it to similar amercian vehiciles on the toyota.com website, it would run at $26-27,000 which for me is more affordable personally, and in all honesty is all I would ever want/need.
I think most guys who are into mild or even hardcore 4x4ing and who are buying new would much rather have a base truck to start from to mod instead of paying money for some offroad packge truck with all these fancy interior upgrades, when in all actuality you're just going to replace all the components that the 4x4 package comes with anyways? (other than maybe the Elocker perhaps). This is my take on it anyways.
I emailed Toyota Canada on this very issue and they said they have noted it and have forwarded my email to their product planning deparment, where if they get enough interest they may do it. I mean it's not like they've ixned the 4 cyls altogether (2.7 VVT-i), they do have the 4x2 in Canada. So they will have to have some parts up here for them. And it's not like they had trouble selling their 4x4 4 cyls in the 96-04 Tacoma's - there just wasn't many of them as they didn't put many of them on their lots. But they're a great little truck for what they are and I think the 4 cyl has just enough balls for what I want it for.
If you too are interested in a 4x4 4 cyl access cab, please go to toyota.ca and send them an email! Perhaps with enough interest we can get them to bring the 4 cyl 4x4 Access Cab to Canada!
Thanks

But you Canadian guys can get a Tacoma double cab (4 front hinged full doors) with the 5 speed right?
We can't.... I keep trying to tell Toyota....
I see your point on the 4 bangers though.

The 01-04 d-cab's in canada and us are all auto's. 05 to present d-cabs are 6speeds with the shorter box only. No 6speed for us in the 6 foot box and 4 doors for some reason.
