Can I swap Taco 5 lug axles into a elocker rear?

I just purchased a elocker off ebay. I am not that crazy about doing the retrofit to make it work with my axle .I have a 5 lug taco with the 8.4 rear 3rd.Can I just purchase a e locker rear housing and swap my disc brakes and axles and elocker into that housing then up under the truck?

If your a mini truck from 95-04 your gonna have the 7.5" rear diff. Both the 7.5 and 8.4 are impossible (really hard) to modify to an elocker.

So your only decision would be to have the whole elocker housing under your truck, but your stock mini truck axle would be spring under where as the elocker is spring over. I don't know what suspension set up your running.

Also I dunno the width difference or anything with the 7.5 and 8" housings. And I believe the 7.5 is 27 spline while the 8" and 8.4 are 30 splines.

If you have the 8.4 tacoma not the mini-truck axle. then your axle shafts should work, you just have to modify the elocker housing for spring under.

How'd you get the 5lug set up with the 8.4, just get new shafts?

I have the fully loaded model mini with the V6 auto. I purchased a 4.10 non-locker rear 3rd awhile back from a YT member and the 3rd went in no problem.Or at least the shop that did the swap didn't have any problems. I do beleive the axle bearings are the same size for the TRD elocker equiped rear so I am assuming that All I would have to do is get a elocker rear housing and do the swap and add spring perches for the spring under design. Is this correct?

What did that 4.10 diff come out of?

If you were 5lug stock, your not 8.4 your 7.5 rear axle. I dont think the 8.4 ever came in a 5lug.

Post some pics up

The 3rd came out of a 1997 Tacoma 4x4 . I thought all Tacomas Tundras and some 4runners that were late model had the 8.4 ring gear 3rd. What is the 8" rear?

I also thought that the TRD axles and housings were the same as the NonTRD (non-Locker) only had the extra cutout for the elocker actuator?

The mini Tacos did come with the 7.5 rear if they were a 4 banger .If it was a v6 then they all came with the latest 8.4 rear .

No 4runner has ever come with the 8.4 rear, none. They all have come with eh 8" differential, the most common toyota differential, which comes in two main flavors 4cylinder and Turbo/v6. Trucks past 95.5, all runners, and fj's come with the 8". The 8.4 only came in tacos, t100's. tundras, and sequoias.

The 8.4 and standard 8" are completely different animals different number of bolts on the ring gear, a bearing brace, and different mounting pattern.

The elocker is based off the standard 8" differential, so 8" v6/turbo gear sets are the ones you use on elockers.

Nope, what you have been seeing is an 8" housing modded for an elocker. The 8.4 housing is so much work to get the elocker to fit in, i don't even know if this has been completely accomplished.

If i were you, i'd get an elocker housing and change it to spring under and do that.

I'd still like to see some pics of your rear axle man

When you take your axle shafts out does the axle look like this?

if so they should work, might want to tear it apart and check the spline counts and such.

Well I got a 2000 Tacoma Axle for cheap .The Bearings will mount right up and the its the 8" rear housing. The only problem is it has the two small notches but does not have the C notch for the actuator on the elocker so it will have to be modified and I will have to have some spring perches welded on for my spring under setup. My 5 lug Tacoma axles will swap right over .Both Rear axle housings are 54" in length .Now I do not have a welder and will probably have my local shop do the Retofit.Anyone have any Idea what a reasonable price is to have this done if I take the axle and Elocker to the and drop it off?
