calling all Mechanics!!! HELP not a truck but a Toyota
Hi all,
Looking for diagnostic help on '85 van engine fam. 3YE, efi and automatic trans:
Here's the situation, van engine quit on hwy, seemed like no gas,
put in two gallons, no go. got towed home, next morning started
fine had engine code for O2 sensor, found loose connection cleared
coded, went on test drive. Upon restart no go, fired the next
morning but quickly stalled, no new test code. Hasn't run since.
What I've done: Air gap out of spec. in distributor, replaced. Set
to TDC installed new cap, rotor, wires, plugs. no spark. Ignition
switch tested bad, replaced. The new plugs stink of fuel, have white
spark at wire #1, cranks strong but won't fire.
I feel like I've tried all the simple stuff. My brain is tapped out.
Question: Is there a relay in the ignition system that could be bad?
and a test to find if it had failed? Is the other option the ECU?
TIA
Nathan
P.S. I have the FSM at home and am pretty confindent in my
mechanicing skills. I haven't got any replys at other toyota boards. If no one can help maybe a redirect.

Thanks, I tried that , even ran the crank around with wrench until I got compression at #1 than stoped at zero on timing marks.
Thanks agian for reply.
Anyone else??

Make sure distributer rotor is pointing at #1 at TDC and plug wires are in correct order.
If everything is ok on ignition side, clean spark plugs and make sure they are dry. Crank engine a few times then pull a plug or two and see if they are dry or wet with fuel (you mentioned you smelled gas before).
If dry, check fuel system like fuel pump, fuel pump relay and related circuits.
If wet, check engine compression on all cylinders with a compression tester as per FSM.

am i safe to assume that you tested/replaced the coil and ignitor?
possibly check for continuity for ignition wires to the ecu
you might want to check at honda-tech.com, the tech section. quite a few rebuilders and mechanics there

I have a a hand held fuel pressure gauge. Where is a safe location on a EFI system to test the pressure? I'll look into the engine coolant senser to the ecu. Have to track that one down.
Thank again for all the replies

As usual more replies here in 24hrs. than any other board I've posted this question on.
Any other ideas

I know it doesn't seem likely, but have you checked ALL the fuses on the vehicle? AND I mean with continuity, not just visual. A blown fuse that looked good once nailed a car of mine for almost a month.
Hope this helps...

Thank You
Given the ideas here. I kept looking. This evening I found out of spec. continuity for the 'start injector time switch' the name alone seem to discribe the problem. Will order in morning and see how it goes from there.
Thank You to all for your replies. I hate taking my rigs to the shop so they can go on a fishing expedition on my dime.
I'll say it again...YOTA TECH RULES...
keep you posted on the outcome.
