Black SR5 wheels???
This is my firt post so go easy on me. I have a 98 SR5 TRD taco and i wanna powdercoat the wheels ("split Y") black. the truck is the dark metallic green color and im not sure just getting them totally black will look good. I was considering either leaving the lip of the wheel silver and coating the spokes, or coating all the flat surfaces that are facing out and leaving the textured parts inside the spokes silver.
Just wanted an opinion or maybe a pic of these wheels black. I've done a search as many different ways as i can think of and cant find black sr5 wheels on a taco. wow. i just read back thru all that and it doesnt really make that much sense. if you close your eyes and imagine real hard, i think you can make out what i'm saying. |
no one even has an opinion on black wheels on a dark green 98 tacoma? :dunno:

There's a few people with stock Runner wheels painted black on this board and they look decent but IMO black wheels have been played out a bit but if you do them right (meaning professionally) they still look good. I think leaving the lip silver like you stated that would look nicer than just all black.

thanks. guess your the only one on the forum with an opinion.
|
i don't think the black wheels are played out at all. i've got blackies on mine and prefer the look of them to chrome on just about any truck/suv. now in terms of painting stock wheels black, i can't tell you too much about that cause i don't know how well that stands up to wear and tear or how it really looks. if you want the black look, steel wheels are really pretty cheap...i got mine for about $35/wheel at discount tire....

theres a thread on here where someone (cant remember who) painted their stock wheels black. Ill see if i can dig it up

I always see a dark colored Tacoma sitting at my local mall (with black wheels).
If I remember (and it's there again tomorrow) I'll try and take a picture so you can get an idea of what they look like on a Tacoma. The only problem is that I don't think those wheels are stock and they might even be steel. But hey, it's worth a try ;) Personally, I don't do black on wheels. I like black cars and all but the wheels gotta shine baby! |
thanks for all the help. cant wait to see the pics

I like black wheels on cars or trucks... but I think they look best on a black vehicle. You should DEFINATELY leave a metal ring around the edge of the rim. It helps break it up from a black tire and black rim. Good luck.

OK,it's played out by the Jeep crowd since I can count 6 '90s Jeep Sports that all have black wheels on my block literally and that trend started in the late '90s on import cars. I would never black out my Limited wheels since they look too nice to make such an understatement with.
|
I'd say do it. That link above is my car, i love the way it looks. Heres a link to a taco with black painted rims. I think it looks a lot better personally.

looks good.. id paint the centercaps and lip though
|
I like the lip as is - I'd also paint the caps though...
|
The lip would be ok, but the center cap just looks goofy like that.
|
I think black wheels look pretty cool, but you gotta leave the lip bright.
