Ball Joints
 

I need to replace Ball joints on the 90 4 Runner. Any special tools needed? I have a "pickle fork" already. Anybody with instructions? I was told it needs uppers, but I might need to do uppers and lowers.

Ball joints hate me and I hate them.

A ball joint separater is an easy way to remove a ball joint. Consider yourself forewarned though that it will likely tear the rubber boot.

Use could also use a ball joint puller that looks something like a harmonic balancer puller.

Anybody know if the replacements from the auto store are pre greased, or do I need to zerk them and install some grease? Also, if I do grease them, should I use a synthetic grease that I already have, or use a convintional grease?

I need to replace my ball joint boots. Any advise out there? Any links?

Very easy job... The ball joints bolt in to the control arm, and you will need to grease them.. The fitting will come with them, just grease them after you have them all put in.. All you need is that fork tool to pop the joint and a good 4lb sledge (makes the job eaiser than a light ball peen hammer)

Lee is right. Buy a big ass hammer - don't waste your time banging with a claw hammer.

I used a 4lb maul to seperate my tie rod ends. I'm sure it will be about the same doing the ball mounts.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be doing the ball joints after I manage to install the headers and exhaust. The header installation was working out great until I broke a bolt. ugghhhhhh

I learned the hard way that I needed a BFH!!!! Bought one at sears the next day. Then the removal was easy and so was the install. Guess I need to grease them.....:roll:
