arb vs. regular lockers vs. positraction

so, what's the most functional for everyday driving/once-a-month-offroading? and which is the most reliable in the Long Run?

thank you in advance!

If you are doing the rear only, probably the Toyota electric locker would be your best bet. Best of both worlds.

I agree with Cebby. you could also add the ARB to the front along with the toyota elocker or just go arb all the way around.

Selectable lockers are definately the best choice for what you are describing. the save tires and gas when on pavement, not to mention you don't here the popping going around corners since they would be set to "open" on the pavement.

What about the reliability of the two? I know the arb is an air driven system while the toy is mechanical/motor driven. I'm going to be looking into one as my open diff is probably going to die soon (the dealer found shavings in the fluid). Does anyone know the price differences on the toy from locking to open? They threw out like $1,300 for an open diff installed at the stealership. I'm just now starting to research this so anything would help. Thanks!

I put in my vote for a limited slip. I too am wrestling with this question. I am going to be onroad most of the time, but lots of mountain roads. A locker would help you much more when you wheel, but when you're not wheeling you can't really use it (because you need to turn) so it's not going to be on for 90% of your driving.

If you are like any of the rest of us and enjoy wheeling, then your passion for getting out more and more will increase. The more you wheel the more you'll want to challenge yourself and your rig. A limited slip is going to be a waste of money in the long run. If you get selectable lockers, then issues like turning are moot. You can turn them off whenever you want.

Regarding reliability, the qulaity of the install has a lot to do with the ARB's reliability, not as much with the E-Locker. IMHO, wiring is easier than messing with airlines. If either is installed improperly, you'll have problems though. Hey, they have moving parts, things wear out, accidents happen. You might snag an airline on something with the ARB or you might bash the e-locker solenoid on a rock. Stuff happens.

You can get a complete third member already setup with gears and a e-locker for about $1300, one setup with an ARB for about $1600 roughly. If you are at all mechincally inclined, you could install these. The hard part is done for you. Off Road Solutions, Rockstomper, and Inchwormgear are a few places to look.

Just my 3 cents. (long post)

I'd consider doing it yourself, you can get a complete third member with open diff from Northwest Offroad for around $300 I think. I don't have my catalog with me here at work but I can find out tonight if you like. you can also get them with lockers and gears of your choice installed ready to plug into your housing if you like, cheaper than that stealership quoted you for an open one.
