any one put car tires on a truck?

Anyone use a set of car tires for your rig? I'm looking to be more efficient on the highway. I never go off-road.

I had a 1976 4x4 Blazer that we experimented with car tires on. I gained 1mpg and lost all respect for myself. Seriously, the other trucks laugh.

The only thing I'd be worried about other then the funny looks and the self pitty would be the load rating, I dunno if all car tires are strong enough for a truck.

1996+ runners came w/ passenger tires from the facotry. they are simply P instead of LT tires and have lower load ratings.

tread design and overall diameter are much more important.

a mild street tire w/ a diameter matched for your gear ratio is as good as it gets- and that's usually whatever the tire size listed on the VIN plate says.

ACtually, yes I use P rated street tread tires on my other truck in the summer - even though it's 4wd - it rides soooo much smoother and quieter and actually corners better too! They're 285/60R18 (essentially 32x11.50) Hankooks. I love em.

Like this? 2005 Toyota X-Runner:

18-in. alloy wheels with 255/45R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE 050A tires

my 01 tacoma has p265 75r 16 they ride nice and smooth and not bad offroad so far... but im gonna replace them with LT285/75r/16 off road tires

jimbo74 08-19-2005 11:44 AM

there ar etruck passenger tires and regular car passenger tires... they arent the same as but they can probably still work... most tires now a days are sold on trucks are passenger tires due to being softer and smoother than a truck tire....

heres the point i am making... if it came down to deciding to put on a p235/75/15 firestone 380 or a p235/75/15 comanche h/t i would put on the actually truck tires..... the firestone 380 although sold in the size that would fit, is the same type of tire that came stock on my sisters civic... for some reason, i i would rather have a truck tire on the street than a civic tire under my truck

:good: and on heavier trucks the P sizes don't last as long either.
But I think the tires that come on trucks being P tires have nothing to do with ride and everything to do with cost savings....

Yes, including all Toyota SUVs and Tacomas. Does anyone REally think Bridgestone Potenzas are offroad tires? (Unless you get the TRD pkg, then you get Ragged Trails, not a great offroad tire either...)

You could look at something like the Michelin LTX M/S. They are designed more for paved road use. There are other choices as well like Goodyear H/T and most other tire companies have tires that are the correct size mud and give you what you are looking for.

Jason B also has a thread about the Bridgestone Dueller H/L
