Annoying Chirp - Squeak

I've prowled around several forums looking for an answer to where my annoying chirp might be coming from but so far have not been lucky in finding an answer.

The truck is a 2000 Tacoma 4WD 2.7L 5-speed and bone stock. It has 77k miles and I've not had it long so I don't know too much about it's history.

It seems to be a solid truck, but there is an annoying chirp/creek/squeak that occurs when my foot is barely on the gas pedal (barely as in depressed maybe an inch or so). It also chirps when I remove my foot from the gas pedal. This chirp doesn't happen all the time and isn't constant.

As far as I can tell the chirp seems to be coming either from the middle of the underneath of the truck or just rear of the middle (maybe near the gas tank). It sounds similar to a cricket chirping or a fluttering squeak. Not extremely loud but hearable.

I don't think it's clutch related. It appears to be directly related to the gas delivery as it only happens when the gas pedal is partially depressed or when the foot is off the gas pedal. I've read about bad u-joints but would they only squeak with partial throttle?

Any suggestions or points-in-the-right-directions are much appreciated!

BREAK OUT SOME BUG SPRAY!!!! joking of course. I had this on an old Toyota car of mine, it turned out to be something in the air vent ducting, like a leaf, eventually it stopped. For us it sounded exactly like a cricket too. Drove us crazy!!!

Maybe a dry rubber drivetrain mount?

Try getting under the truck and pushing up or side to side in the trans, engine, exhaust system and see if you can duplicate it.

Does it do it if you are sitting still and rev the engine? Sounds like it's caused when the engine / drivetrain torques back and forth?

I'll get under there and shove stuff around this evening and see if I can force the chirp.

Yes, it will chirp when I'm sitting still. Thanks for the suggestion.

Listen to it carefully....is it happening on the rotation of the drive-shaft? My u-joints are getting done as we speak....could be that they have dried up and need to be greased if you have grease nipples....mine were enclosed on my 4Runner so they needed to be changed.

A dry joint will emit a high-pitched squeaking sound for each revolution of the driveshaft. Not unlike a squeaky toy for a pet. The sound will typically begin once the vehicle is moving and continue up till around 20 miles per hour. The good news is that bad joints usually go thousands of miles before they fail. Vibration can become an issue.
My mechanic just called, my rear u-joint was gone and causing the sound.

I've seen posts about the U-joints, but mine chirps when in neutral.

I'm having the same issue:

I have searched the 100’s of squeak posts on Yotatech, and this is most close to mine.

2000 SR5 4x4, 3.4L. 110K miles. I have an intermittent squeak that occurs when driving under light throttle/minimum load. It sounds like a chirp chirp chirp. The chirp is not RPM dependent, not bump dependent, and not speed dependent, although it seems to go away over 40-45 miles per hour. What’s weird is that it occurs most prominently when coasting or with very light throttle application, but gets less or disappears with acceleration or when maintaining more throttle (such as going uphill).

The squeak seems to occur more in cool weather, and goes away after about 20-30 miles of driving.

Driveshaft/Ujoint lubrication?

Also of note,, I think my voltage regulator may be going bad because sometimes my headlights gets brighter, and fan gets faster when I apply throttle. I think this is unrelated though, because if the alternator were squeaking, I think it would be RPM dependent.

Thanks for any help!

Hi, wondering if you could hear the squeaky sound outside the car as well as inside, I can only hear it on the inside of the car,
Thanks :)

I have the Same chirping noise on my tacoma reg cab. I hear it when I brake or go over bumps. I thought at first it was my tool box but it wasn't. I can push my truck up and down and cant hear a thing. I have no Idea what it could be. Maybe coil springs?
