Air valve?

I read in my haynes manual about the air valve on the throttle body. I tested it by moving the idle screw and it is acting like it is bad. My truck, which is a 3vze, dies after coming from 4omph to a stop. While I was playing with the idle screw I noticed when I loosened it the engine ran smoother. I decided to leave it like that and drive it. I couldn't get it to die once. I don't know when I will have time to visually inspect the air valve. My question is, is it safe to leave the idle how it is or is that just covering up another problem?

What is your idle set at?

Snap , i was reading that same section in my haynes manual last night, its not something that gets mentions on here much.i was gonna play with it next weekend.
it says that when the engine is hot that the idle screw should not effect rpm.if it does then the air valve may be defective.
ok so next Q is where is the air valve on a 3zve?
it doesnt show it in the haynes manual.

How in the world could you not know what your idle is set at? Look at your tach.

I don't have a tachometer.
