advice on a little lift?

OK, ive done searches and read a lot of what you guys have said about lifting 4runners and I get the basic gist. what im looking at here is a small budget, but a real desire to raise the truck a little bit.

i'd like to lift it an inch, but i'd go for 2 if that was just an easier / smarter choice. as you may know from my rearview theads etc, im not the MOST technically inclined member here, but i am getting my hands dirty and getting better at it. :hillbill:

that said... what is your advice for my 2001 4runner 4x4 from start to finish on:

1. how to best achieve a 1 or 2 inch lift
2. what this will cost if i do it myself
3. what this will cost if i have someone else do it for me
4. what types of things to look for -- ie what will wear out, what will break, what needs replacing, etc.
:dunno:
i realize many have come to this board seeking this advice, but i need it personalized to me if im ever going to really do it.

once again, thanks for any/all help :bigok: :bigok:

Sounds like Cornfeds or RB body lifts are what you want. I think I personally would go for the Cornfeds.

I would recommend the Performance Products springs. They really help the vehicle handle better.

I bought mine slightly used for $200. Check the for sale forum, they tend to pop up from time to time.

I didn't have time to install mine (although I wish I had installed it for experience), and it ran me $200 with an alignment.

PP advertises it as a 1 inch lift, but I got 1.75" of lift.
I want just a little more of a lift so I am thinking of going with the RB 1" body lift this summer.

so thats $400 for 1.75" of lift... hmm. thats still a higher price than i'd hoped...

thanks for the info..

any other suggestions?

a body lift is around $100.

any type of suspension lift will need new shocks for maximum performance so thats going to run you at least $200 for shocks alone.

I would go with Cornfeds. A lot of people tend to use them and they are a very good product. a lot of people i chat on different forums like them a lot. thats just IMHO. :drink: If you go with a 2" lift, you dont need to replace anything. The spacer just goes right on. It is my understanding that if you go more than 2.5, you need to get more things. try www.cornfedsuspension.com

thanks! what about the OEM lift? what does it consist of, how much is it and how much of a lift is it?

yep.
maybe a bit more with shipping any the brackets and steering extension you might need.
i have a 1.5 inch roger brown body lift. it's a good thing.

if you hold a wrench-a-thon, install is free. well, the cost of pizza and beer perhaps.
don't go to a shop to install a body lift. they'll charge waaaaay too much for something you can do with some help of friends and learn a thing or two along the way.

OEM or OME?

A complete OME (Old Man Emu) kit will run you over $600 w/ shipping & tax. It comes with 4 new springs, 4 new shocks, and sometimes trimpackers (small spacers). OME says you should get 2.5" of lift from it. Many have gotten more, many have gotten less.

I run it, but of course being the idiot that I am..forgot to measure before/after the lift. So we'll just call it taller.

A few others recommend spacers for your situation. I agree, they're cheap and practial. Have you looked into the Revtek kit? $311.

lee 05-28-2004 05:30 AM

yes, sorry i meant OME, my fingers just make me write OEM.

man, 600 bucks? geez. I wish boston had at least ONE 4x4 shop i could go into and get some quick price breakdowns from. it seems im gonna have to order it and allow my car guy to install for me... i dont have any install space as i live in an apt. that has no driveway / garage / lift.

lee 05-28-2004 05:32 AM

so to recap: if i went with spacers, i could buy the 2" cornfed spacers for 130 bucks and THATS IT? do i need to get both front and back -- so 130 + 140?

that seems like the way im gonna go...

lee 05-28-2004 05:33 AM

sorry to triple post, but i just thought of this... if i raise it 2", will it make my on-road tires look ridiculous & small?

I second the motion

First big mod I did was a 2" Roger Brown body lift. It cost me $168 and that was with 3 day air shipping.

My OME stuff cost me about $650, coils and springs, and it gave me 2.5"-3" of lift, so I'm sitting at about 5" of lift overall for less than $900.

The Roger Brown body lift is good material, good instructions and Roger is a great guy to deal with as he knows his stuff and will surely help you out. Just email him.

I have a write-up about putting on all my lift, body and suspension with costs, tools needed, etc. so check that out and see if it helps you out some.

Good luck!
