97 4runner won't go past 4,000 rpm?

i have a 1997 4runner v6 4wd, i had to hit the gas to the floor the other day and my car acted like the rev limiter was at 4,000 rpm. some of my friends thinks it maybe the computer or mass airflow sensor. what do you people think it is? just driving normally it acts just fine, shifts just fine, i still get about 19 mpg. i origionally thought it might be the fuel pump not working hard enough, but i'm not too sure now.

The ECM controls the rev limiting of the engine I believe. Others have had this problem and have replaced it and it worked. You could try going to the dealer and seeing if they can reflash it for you.
