96 4Runner w/ 2002 lights, grille, skidplate - PICS!

Just thought I'd post pics of what I've done recently...I put the '02 Sport skidplate on my 96. I have Limited style trim in the dark blue/gray/charcoal color that I'm thinking about putting on....Whatcha think?? :)

Doug,

Looks really sharp---good job! What kind of fog lights do you have? They look amber. One of these days in a few months, I'll probably add a set. How much were they?

I haven't been to GA since the Olympics. I always forget how scenic the state is until I see pics of GA from forum members. :)

Hey, did you modify the brackets for the skid plate? I ask because I got the skid plate too and when i test fit the skid plate it stuck out about 3-4" past my front bumper. It stuck out too far because the 99+ 4runners have that extended front bumper. It looked pretty bad so I am going to modify the brackets some how so it is almost flush and i was wondering if you did the same because it looks like it.

rimpainter.com 06-23-2003 11:17 AM

Dude, that looks awesome. I am having a hard time with that grill, not sure why. But everything looks great! :bigok:

shazaam 06-23-2003 11:38 AM

how would you like an 02 bumper (w/flares) to go with that?

96TRDsc 06-23-2003 11:49 AM

Nolan...I had the same problem with the bracket and the plate sticking out too far ;) I think I ended up reversing the brackets and using the rear mounting holes on the plate with the front most mounting holes on the brackets...I'll get a pic today and post it for you...its still plenty stable and solid :)

sdastg1 - I heard that you couldnt just swap bumpers...that there was more to it than a simple swap...anyone know exactly what has to be done to "upgrade" to a newer bumper?

shazaam 06-23-2003 11:54 AM

I have no clue. I thought I had read earlier that it was compatible with 96-02 4runners. But this is just word of mouth. If you find out let me know too. thanks

CLin9383 06-23-2003 12:14 PM

what kinda of fog lights did you get and where?? i'm interested..thanks!

96TRDsc 06-23-2003 12:22 PM

I got these fog lights a while back...the reason I got them is because they were thin rectangles and would fit in the top gap of the front lower trim...they are regular H3 bulb fog lights

Hey cool thanks, pictures of how you mounted it would be greatly appreciated!

Also where did you pick up the grill at? I think it looks sweet with the 99+ mulit reflective lenses. I was thinking about about getting the grill but I wasnt sure because i have the charcoal bumpers also, but i think it goes very well.

There are more pics with the new headlights, grille, and corners (Jason Burtman!)....to help convince you to get them ;)

I'll see if I can figure out where I got them, who makes them and how much they were :)

Vato Loco 06-23-2003 01:13 PM

That looks real nice!

Bob_98SR5 06-23-2003 01:18 PM

Doug,

Oh, if you do put on those Limited flares, I'll buy your old SR5 flares from ya. :)

I think I either got the grille off Ebay..or from Toyotaparts4u.com...I cant remember...I buy so much stuff *haha*

I had to put them on this way to avoid it sticking out too far in the front :)

Hey 96TRDsc ! Thanks so much for the pics on the skid plate. I got one a week ago and haven't been happy with how far it sticks out. Your pics are really going to help me and I'm going to the garage right now to make the switch.

Yotatech rules!!!!!!!!!!!!

shiftMX 06-23-2003 05:06 PM

Hey Doug,

What are you going to do with the old 96 grille? I would be interested in that. Just let me know. If you know anyone who needs a 99 sr5 grille, I would be willing to sell or trade. And if you don't want the limited flares, I would be interested in that also.

Bob and 96runner....if I can get my hands on some limited flares, i will be willing to get rid of my sr5 flares if either of you are interested.

I have the grille sittin in the garage in the Toyota shipping box that my new one came in :) make me an offer...I'm always up for freeing up some space in the garage *hehe*...

I havent decided about the limited trim yet....I'm still debating it

butnut 06-24-2003 02:10 AM

Sweet Runner and very tastey upgrades. Nice job. If you wanted that skid more rigid, a 1" wide piece of flat steel with 3 holes and some washer/shims would beef up the mounting easily. I may try and get one of those...looks real sharp.
:nerd:

96TRDsc 06-24-2003 04:50 AM

If anyone was curious...I got the '02 skidplate off Ebay for $169...much better than the $300+ from the dealer :)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2417151507

I dont know if this is someone from a dealer...but they usually sell brand new, toyota, 4Runner related parts :)

Zubaltec 06-24-2003 05:51 AM

The 99-02 bumper is a direct bolt on to a 96-98.

Thanks,
John

I must have been thinking about the lower valence from a 99+ not fitting directly on a 96 bumper....I guess the bumper is a direct swap...lower valence only is not :)

shazaam 06-24-2003 07:38 AM

thanks for the clarification john

Zubaltec 06-24-2003 09:07 AM

Yeah the whole bumper, valance will fit. I don't think the valance from a 99-02 will fit on a 96-98 bumper. The 99-02 bumper itself sticks out further then the 96-98, and then the lower has that part in the middle that sticks out as well. So the dimentions of the two bumpers would be completely different.

your 96 4runner SC

Doug,

Curious how your running gear on the supercharged version has held up.
Do you drive it hard, tow anything, and how long have you owned it?
Looking to purchase one right now but I am nervous for a few reasons.
First the power increase I have heard is actually A LOT less in everyday driving than people typically think. Two the transmission was not given an upgraded valve body, including clutch and reaction plates. Three no upgraded torque converter. problems with increased heat, etc etc.
As you can see I am leaning away from the SC but would like to know from some one who drives one what your real world experience has been. People on this and other forums have talked about how the 3.4 is much better than the 3.0 and I agree. But the 10 or so 3.4's I have driven all with aprox 125K miles have been pretty dogish as well. Currently looking to buy a 96 SC with 131,000 miles. Any info you or anybody could contribute would be great. Thanks in advance!
Joel

Joel,

I sold my 96 4Runner about a year ago (along with my Supra *moment of silence please*) and bought a 2005 4Runner Sport V8 4wd and a house :)

I already had 100k miles on my 96 when we put the supercharger on it. It made a HUGE difference in daily driving...I'm not sure why people are telling you otherwise. I ran 9.7 sec in the 1/8th mile..that is AWESOME for a suv.

I would not have a 3rd gen again unless it had the sc on it, I liked it THAT much.

As for the tranny, I sold it with 136k miles and I had never had a problem out of it. I also had the trd tranny cooler so that might have helped the tranny. Not sure what shape it is in now...but when I had it, it was just fine. I didnt do a lot of towing, but I did tow my Supra about two hours to Atlanta once with the sc 96...no problem.

I'm sure it boils down to "depends on the shape of the 4Runner you get". If you get one that has been well maintained...flushed fluids and kept everything up-to-date, I dont think you will have a problem. Get one that has been ragged out and beat to death, there might be reliability issues.

Sorry I couldnt be more of a help.

Where are you located and how much are you looking to spend?
One ride and you'll know what your getting (either good or bad).

bigacuralvr 04-25-2006 09:59 AM

So, are there 2 different grills from 99-02? Mine looks a bit different...
