90-95 engines and models
So I really want one of these trucks with a 22re 5 speed combo. Great mileage, ultra reliable, so I hear. Two questions:
With an ext. cab 4x4, driven carefully, what sort of mileage can I expect? Did Toyota make the SR5 truck with a 4 cylinder? And a follow-up, if they didn't (or its really rare) how hard is it to change a truck from a V6 to a 4? Does everything fit okay? Gearing no problem? Thanks alot |
The 22re should last for well over 200k if it was taken care of. I pretty sure they are out there. I believe the 22re was used until 1996. Good luck in finding one. Don't know about the engine swap thing.

If my memory serves me correct, 94 was the last year for the 22re, 95 went with the 2.7L.

yes, the 4 cylinders were most definitely available with the SR5 package! they are a little less common than V6 SR5 trucks, though.
extended cabs are more common with the V6, but finding a 4 cylinder truck with an extended cab shouldn't be too hard. my '91 regular cab 4x4 with the 22R-E gets about 20mpg on average right now. when i bought it in august, it was getting closer to 23mpg, i blame the terrible winter fuel for the mileage drop. |

look, there's a column for Xtracab SR5 V6, and Xtracab SR5. they were most definitely produced. that said, the only real upgrade the SR5 has in those years is a tach and a couple extra gauges. i'm not a big fan of the chrome fender trim, a lot of trucks have it missing/falling off, and it looks cleaner(imho) without it. |

My father put 340k on an Xtracab SR5 22RE 5 speed. Average mpg was 19-21 year after year.

So they made them, but they were really rare. Darn. Any way to put power widows/locks into a deluxe model?
One more question - how much better is the 2.7 and 3.4 in the slightly newer tacos? I'm driving a T100 right now with a 3.4 and it's getting like 18 in city and 20 on highway, and has heap-good power. I haven't heard much talk about the 2.7 - is it a good engine? Would a 96 or after Taco get better mileage than the 22re? What are the pros and cons between the 22re and the newer engines? I know back when I was a Ford truck man I was all into the 351 windsors they put into the pre-96 trucks - I never liked the idea of the 4.6 V8 and stuff. |
The 2.7(3rz) and 22re are both great motors. Between the two motors it is hard to say which is better, maybe they are equal in terms of reliability. I would urge you to go for a Tacoma with the 3rz for several reasons. I had a 93 4x4 w/ 22re and a 95.5 and 97 tacoma w/ 3rz, now a 00 runner w/ 3rz. For me I like the 3rz better, not saying it is better, what I like is the extra power, 150hp vs 116, and the smoothness of the motor. Also the Tacomas are a bit larger so they ride better and the coil over front suspension is an improvement IMO. Heres a few points in favor of the 3rz, after 96 they had direct ignition, timing chain guides are metal unlike plastic in the 22re and the 3rz is a non interference motor. Now there is a running argument on that last point but I believe the concesnus is that the 22re is interference.

the 2.7 may get better gas mileage simply for being a newer motor but there will not be much difference between them, at least i didnt notice. They are both great motors, but i like the 22re better and especially more so then the v6 in earlier models. I dont know why this is the case, probably where i just grew up and know 22r and re and know they are invincible, also i dont like new things and in the early 90's the v6 is new, mind you it is still a great motor and probably just as good but is just the way i feel/felt.

My 88 4Runner SR5 doesnt have power windows/locks, and my brother's 84 SR5 4Runner diddnt have power locks/windows. |
