87 4Runner front end lift via torsion bars????
Hi all,
Just looking for some guidance related to adding lift to front end of my 87 Runner. Somewhere I read that by adjusting the torsion bars, I could gain a little clearance for the 32" BFG MT's I'm running. How much lift can safely be gained? Is this an acceptable way to get a little lift up front? Any special tools required to do this? How about disadvantages by doing this?? Any and all help/detailed instructions will be very much appreciated!!

I'm not a search nazi, but I'll say it nicely before anyone else gets on ya about it.
This is covered a ton of times on here. Whenever you want to know something, click on the search button under the tacoma on the top of your page. If you don't find it there feel free to ask.
Anyway, Lift can be achieved this way. Technically you can crank them all the way up until the upper arm hit s the bumpstop. But this is not ideal. about 1.5" of lift is about the max suggested. As you crank the arms up, it will tend to make your ride slightly stiffer, but you can be the judge of that. As you crank the arms you are loosing down-travel, which is the easier movement when flexing out. Is this rig off-roaded frequently or are you just trying to fit 32's?
It is a free lift and all you need is a socket set and a socket wrench with enough leverage. Try it out. Remember how many turns you gave it, so you can return it if you want. Keep in mind that you don't want your axles at too much of an angle when in 4x4.
Also stay away from aftermarket torsion bars unless you get a heavy bumper or long travel arms.....they'll be way too stiff otherwise.
