85 4runner questions

I got my 1985 toyota 4Runner free from my grandpa. I was wondering if it was posible for me to get the removable top off. Seems easy to answer but there's a problem. The body is terrible and the tailgate had rusted shut. I just want to take it off but im not sure if i can get it back on. Another thing is that this 4 cyl. lacks acceleration, even w/ the 5spd. Are there any power mods? I cant find any. Maybe im lookin too hard. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

you have a hot commodity there my friend! you may want to try and find a newwer model and keep the front end (complete axle assy) for a SAS (solid axle swap) later on. some of the members on here may try and sweet talk you out of that rig, bad body, rust and all!!

remove the trim pieces all around the inside of the back and you will see 12 (?) bed bolts holding the top on. the back left corner you will find a little flip cap and under that will be the hose for the rear washer and a connector for the electrics for the wiper. disconnect both, undo all the bolts, put them in a safe place and get a friend to help you remove the top. look up 'roger brown' and search his site for reinstall directions. they are pretty specific, follow them when putting the top back on. hope this helps.

Yeah what he said.

But on the mod's there are lots to do but the best bang for the buck is this from TCR.
EFI Performance package
It is for the 22RE engine If you have the 22R than that web site will help also.

But im not sure if it will come off. The rear window will not move up or down. Im not sure if it makes a difference :dunno: .

I'd advise that before you spend any money on mods for the engine you give it a little TLC. It sounds like the truck has been neglected a bit & with a really thorough tune up you should get a lot of power back. My 90 had the 22re & It was *almost* always enough HP. Congrats on the rig, a lot would say that's the best 4runner ever made, since you get the EFi + solid front axle. Sounds like it's going to take some work to get it where you want it though.

Oh, and welcome to the board!

Thanks and yeah its definitly a project. Im hoping to find a 4Runner with a better body. Is there such thing as a body swap? Parts are hard to come by where i live (wisconsin). All the older toyotas are completely rusted out. I heard of a toyota boneyard in madison. I'll have to check it out. Where is the best place (of the country) to look for a 4Runner w/ the same body as mine?
Oh yeah i already gave it a fresh cap/rotor, plug, and wires. The idle was too low so i tuned that as well. Before it used to idle really rough nd even stall, but now it runs like a champ (kinda).
