84 5speed leaking

ihave a 84 xtra cab with 22re and the tranny leaks a little.if it is parked for a couple hours a drop or 2 will be on the ground.it looks to be coming from the seal on top of tranny with the 4 or five 12 mm bolts holding on a plate that is just below the 4 that hold on the gear shifter lever which has 10mm bolts holding it on .How tight should the 12mm bolts be on that plate?have u ever seen this plate leak gear oil?its difficult to see if it is the place that is leaking.I tightened the 12 mm bolts and cleaned the tranny off, refilled up to the hole and i checked it periodically for a day or two and i didnt see any more fluid.I figured i fixed it and a week later it was dropping fluid again.apparently the leak isnt that bad.when i wiggled the plate in question it looked to have some gear oil coming out of the seal.It is a black flat one .I tightened the plates bolts in questionbefore i cleaned it and used a 3/8 ratchet and snugged em.

Well, its most likely the input/output shaft seal. Which, if you keep the tranny fluid "full" shouldnt pose much of a problem. We had the same problem on our old 92 Maxima, and just kept our eye on it.

Eventually it will need to be replaced, but you will have to pull the tranny.

i think i fixed it

gear oil was leaking from the plate that bolts on the gear shifter. It is the one with the 4 10mm bolts.I took the plate off and noticed some oil had been leaking out of it.It doesnt have a seal it just mates metal to metal.i put some rtv and that should have taken care of it.Thanks for the help!!:)
