60 or 70 Amp Alternator in '90 4Runner?
I picked up a '90 4Runner this summer that needs some TLC. One thing it needs is a new alternator, but the part # is worn off the sticker and I can't read it anymore. Rebuilt alternators are over $200, so I'd just assume find a used one for now. Trouble is, there are (at least) two alternators offered for this year and I'm not sure which I have, a 60 or 70 amp version. It's a '90 4x4 4 door with a 22RE and A340H tranny. One place told me it should be a 60 amp because that's the most common, and another place tells me the autos use a 70 amp. Rebuilt alternators like at Shuck's or Checker use a non-factory part # system.
I have no idea which is right, but I do know if I use the wrong alternator I'll blow the fusable link under the hood. I tried swapping in an alternator from an '86 pickup with a 22R and 5 speed into a different but similar 4Runner with an auto and 22RE and it blows the link (even though the alternator works fine in the '86). I heard there was a rewiring of the alternators in the late 80's and that might be why I was blowing fusable links, but then again I don't know for sure. Are you sure there is more than one alt offered? On my 93, the alt shop told me all of the models came with a 60amp.

From what dealers, salvage yards, and parts stores are telling me, yes there are two alternators available for this year. One is supposedly for 5-speeds and one for autos. My guess is the autos need more charging power due to the extra electronics and have a 70 amp instead of a typical 60 amp. Two dealerships responded to emails of mine today and both gave the same part # for a 70 amp alternator, so that's likely what I will go with.
