5-speed to automatic conversion

I have a 1990 4x4 xtra cab V-6 and I want to convert it from a 5-speed to automatic for my son. The truck only has 70,000 and still has a lot of good years in her. Can this be done? And about how much will it cost to do this. Thanks in advance for the help.

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing in order to make the 1uz swap easier. The hardest part would be the wiring.

probably be easier to teach your son to drive a standard

You are probably going to need a new engine ECU, you will need to find a tranny ECU from that year, the shifter, tranny, flex plate, torque converter, wire harnesses, and on and on and on.

I would not even attempt this. It would be cheaper selling it and buying something else.

Just let him drive a stick. Trust me, he will figure it out quick.

Most folks go from AT to MT and have to rewire the P/N starter relay. These Toys have the AT functions built in to the main ECU I would not even consider going from MT to AT on these, for the price you would pay for all of the required parts you could have the clutch changed out twice and have a little left for the third one. IMHO: teach him to drive the MT after all that is driving.

I changed my '90 4Runner V6 from an auto to a 5 speed. I bought a rollover '92 4Runner to get the trans and I figured it would not be a big deal. It was quite a bit more involved than I thought it would be.

That said, I have all the automatic parts from the '90, everything from the brake pedal to the engine control. If you want to do it, I will work a good trade for you. I can use another 5 speed for a pick-up project I am getting started on.

If you are interested PM me.

i got my truck when i was 16, my first truck, actually my first vehicle ever. i payed my dad the money and he picked it up wgile i was at work, when i came home he handed me the keys and asked if i wanted him to go with me since it was my first time with my truck and a stick. i was in it for 5 minutes and after that i had it down. trust me, your son will do fine.
