4wd does not engage
Several years ago, in a fit of poor judgment, decided to try to engage the 4wd in the middle of a loss of traction. It was snowy and, while going around a turn, I pushed the 4wd button. It did not go well. I don't remember the sounds I heard, but they were not good. Maybe an audible "thunk". I have no idea where to begin in diving in. I have the FSM. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

 Just what if anything have you looked at??
If you have your FSM look at how the 4x4 systems engages . Does the 4Runner drive other then the 4 wheel drive engaging?? If so I would be looking at the front axle first |
Several years ago?

 I was thinking about that as well Several years ???:think:
Pretty sure it will not work now without some TLC !!! |
First thing to do is figure out if the problem is in TC or the front diff.
Start with a cold 4Runner in 2wd so vacuum has leaked down. 1. Verify front DS turns freely. 2, Ignition on but not started: Engage 4wd. If front DS still turns freely, the TC is not engaging. If it locks up, problem is in front diff or ADD system. Go from there. Do you have push-button or J-shift? |
