40k routine maint CEL

99 4runner 2.7
its got roughly 46k on it
at 40k the CEL came on
from my guess it was one of those routine maint things
the same thing hapend on our 04 sienna that i fixed
but
for some reason i cant seem to figure out this one.
anyone experience this and/or know how to get rid of it ?

904_runner May 4, 2008 05:43 PM

What code was it?

scuba May 4, 2008 05:46 PM

honestly
i didnt pull codes
like i said the cel in our sienna came on at 40k also
and so did this one in the 4runner
so i thought it would be safe to assume it was a routine maint thing
its been fine for the last 6k miles
seriously

904_runner May 4, 2008 05:47 PM

Im, not sure, i would still pull the codes.

scuba May 4, 2008 05:56 PM

oh gosh
what now ??
oh
nvm
EDITED
lol
but seriously
theres some sequence, like key in ignition, hold down trip button ignition on. something like that
please help

toytech76 May 4, 2008 07:16 PM

come on now Don't just clear it hoping the problem will go away. Obviously there is a problem and thats why the check eng lite came on. There is no 'routine maint' lite or anyhting routine about the check eng lite. Get the code read and get it fixed

scuba May 4, 2008 07:48 PM

ha
prob is my mom took the keys
so as soon as i get them back
i will do so

BigBallsMcFalls May 5, 2008 04:01 AM

yeah there is

open driver door
key in ignition, off
close driver door
open driver door
then close it again

Then, turn key to ON.
next
push trip button and hold it
turn key off, then on

and then the engine light will blink out the code
some fast blinks then a pause, then the next set of blinks

5 fast blinks in a row, then a long pause, it is at then
end then repeating

good luck

98runner210 May 5, 2008 09:24 AM

huh i have never heard of that on a Toyota. I have seen tricks like that for some OBD I or if you jump connectors.

You forgot to mention that you have to be barefoot and 1 hand on your head. count to 10 5 times then count to 5 10 times. But never ever say seven 7 times and 9 three times. That should do it.

Keep us posted on your progress.

On the 3rd gen, there is no routine maint Light, Just the Check engine light. You will have to Pull the codes and fix the Problem to get it fixed. You can clear it but chances are it will come back. the fact that it is 40K is coincidence.

scuba May 5, 2008 04:50 PM

alright
well warriors was right
went to vatozone
codes
PO 441, 446, 450
ill try searching but wanted to let everyone know what happened

BigBallsMcFalls May 5, 2008 05:42 PM

well whew we can all rest now..it is SCUBA destroying the ozone layer after all
-------

bad gas cap or not tight

leaky evap hose (most likely cause) there are at least 5 hoses to check

cracked charcoal can

bad evap pressure sensor

most likely....will cost you some time checking and replacing hoses

NOTE: if dtc was detected when cap was loose, then it was tightened...the EVAP readiness test won't
complete and reset the light for a while. evap test takes a long time to finish. depending on how you drive
and how often you tank up, a week or two. so don't sweat it, and don't consider job done till you drive
a month with no further codes OR you get I/M readiness to READY

best to clear code and just see if you go to I/M ready in a month after you find the root cause and fix it

scuba May 5, 2008 05:51 PM

its the original gas cap and it clicks everytime
so i dont think thats it
ill check all the hoses and whatnot when its not dark
i was reading about 441 on another thread
so ill try and figure this out
i miss my 91
its so easssy
