3rd gen Crankshaft pulley removal?
 

Does anyone know how to remove the crankshaft pulley on a 3rd gen 3.4l 6 cyl 4runner without having to purchase the Toyota Factry service tools for this job? The three Toyota Factory service tools for the crankshaft removal (part#09330-00021, 09213-54015, and part#09950-50010 ) which are made for Toyota by Kent-Moore seem to cost over $200. Is there any other way to do this?

When you look in the shop manual and it recomends a SST just get the ones not in ( ). That is a set that includes everything you need. The ones in the ( ) are the different pieces of the set. You can buy them as a set or individual. If you buy the set you do not need to buy the individual pieces. When I bought mine is was NO WHERE near $200 and I was suprised at how cheap it was. Did you call and try to order it through OTC?

Now, there are all kinds of ways to get the pulley off without the SST, but the more critical thing is how to install and properly torque the pulley bolt. For that you do need the tool.

If that pulley bolt is not properly torqued it can back out and let the pulley disengage from the woodruff key and then the pulley spins on the crankshaft destroying the crank and the pulley.

Do yourself a favor and use the proper tool for this job. In the long run you will still save money as opposed to paying someone to not do it right because they are not likely to have the special tool.

Ditto on the suggestion to get proper tools to replace.

I just won a battle to get a $1000 repair on my truck as the pulley was incorrectly installed and fell off :pat:

If you have the right equipment, you could make a tool for holdingthe pulley as there are a pair of threaded holes on the pulley to take a puller and the SST.

Its 185 lbft of torque for replacing the pulley and you must hold the pulley still.

OTC is OTC. They make tools and handle the SSTs for Toyota.

You can get the tool number out of the factory shop manual, if you do not have one let me know and I will look it up when I get home. You will need two separate ones. One is the flange plate that bolts to the pulley and the long arm that bolts to it.

The nice thing is that most all of these SSTs are used for many different things on the truck.

Just in case anyone else is looking for these tools, I wanted to let you know that they are not available until November through SST, due to the tools coming directly from Toyota of Japan. The tools cost 34.95 and 51.76 for both tools through SST if they were available.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to where I could locate these tools now to buy or even rent? All of the Toyota dealers around my town do not carry or will not order these tools for me. I find this very odd since these are listed in the Toyota FSM. Any suggestions?
