3rd gen ECU question.
Hey guys, I have been getting lovely engine check light. So i reset the computer by unplugging the battery. But the light keeps coming on. So I am bringing it in to get my codes pulled.
My question is this. Does the computer store the previous error code even if you reset the computer by unplugging the battery? Because the light has not come on and I am scheduled to see my mechanic later. OH!, this is a 96 Limited 4x4, no engine mods, except for a remote start. Thanks Guys! Joe |
If you got the engine light to go off after disconnecting battery, the code is more than likely not stored. Depending on severity of the problem, if it hasnt set a code and dash light yet it may show up under "pending codes" by the time you get to the mechanic. "Pending codes" means problems the ECM sees but not yet severe or occured enough times to set the check engine light (technically the MIL, malfunction indicator light).

If you reset the ecu by either pulling the ecu fuse or disconnecting the battery the light will go away. It will not be stored, because you are resetting it. There is no way that a code can be permanenting stored. He can put the OBD-2 scan tool on it and see if a code comes up. Some of the codes will not show a check engine light but will show up on the scan tool.
