3rd Gen Brake Upgrade - No more warped rotors
Well, tonight was the big nite!!
Got my Tundra calipers and rotors installed on my 98 runner. What a difference this brake package makes over stock.
HIGHLY recommended upgrade
3 out of 5 monkey wrenches
You'll need:
2000 Tundra front rotors and calipers
Air sander or dremel tool with metal disc
Brake bleeder of some sort
Misc tools, wrenches, sockets.
Basically, you're going to remove your stock calipers and rotors, grind down the inside half moon of metal near the caliper on the dust shield (about 1/16 - 1/8th of material).
Re-install the Tundra rotors and calipers. Bleed the system, drive your truck!
DONE!!!
Total time with air tools and a lift - 1 hour
BTW - If anyone in the San Diego / Temecula area would like to do this upgrade, let me know as I have a connection at Toyota to get you all your parts. PM me for more info!

This thread is nearly 8 years old. I have long since sold my 4runner and no longer live in Temecula. I realize there may be some additional interest in having this done but I am no longer a good contact point for this.
I'm sure other members here have picked up where I left off and are able to get your needs addressed.

Ha! That's funny. I was talking to a friend of mine a couple days ago about doing the exact same thing. I think this would be a VERY nice cobination with slotted/drilled rotors.

yes,.. do tell...
I was thinking about going with powerslots/ performance friction pads since they are like TRD pads since they made pads for TRD.
An important thing about warping, dont let anyone take an air wrench to the lugs while they are being tightened. You will definately have warped rotors. Those will overtighten the lugs by a lot.

Diameter they are the same, Thickness they are WAY different.
As far as slotted/drilled rotors:
Take it from a guy who used to race auto-x. You are wasting your money on those. But if it makes you feel better......
Braided lines are good as long as you flush out the old fluid and go with DOT4 or better fluid.
Pads, you're on your own. Everyone has something different to say about them so I don't get involved. OEM works good for me on my runner.

Here is a shot of the rotors side by side anyway:
4Runner or Taco

For reference, the inside hub portion is the same size on both.
There may a slight bit more surface area for braking on the Tundra version (this would be fantastic for towing).
I do also believe they are thicker as well which would resist heat warping that much better.

I was researching on buying a Tundra but I never got one.
The front gives you new calipers with a wider spread and entails new backing plates, bearings etc.
The rear gives you heavier drums (I believe same as on 03 Tundra's).
The buletin numbers are as follows:
Rear BR003-02
front BR004-02
If someone can find the actual TSB, go ahead and post it.
Toyota has upgraded the rotor and calipers on trucks built since 9/02

I just went to Autozone and a toyota stealership and both were about as helpful as a box full of hammer handles....
Can this mod be carried out on a 2nd gen? IF the rotors btwn a 3rd gen and 2nd gen are interchangable as are the calipers then this mod WILL work for us...
