3rd gen 4runner exhaust super 44 vs super 40
wanted to get exhaust for my 97 4runner but dont know what to go with. looking to with a deep low sound but dont know which one to choose.
i have the v6 3.4L so im assuming the 2.5" cut is the best way to go? whats the difference with the 2.5" and the 3"?
thanks for input.

id go with neither and get a magnaflow #11255 18'' after it breaks in has a real nice mellow low tone and combined with the isr and deckplate mod it sounds real nice

i have the 40 series on mine, like the sound of it, deep and throaty at lower RPM's... i also only paid $50 for the muffler and install so that was a big choice in me getting it haha

x3 on the magnaflow.. I think 40 series flowmasters sound like a tin-can on a V6. Unless you get like a 70 series, which you can't really hear at idle and has a very light low rumble to it around 1500-2000 rpm

oh I see thanks for all the input everyone really appreciate it
so that specific mangaflow is the best way for me to get the really nice deep low sound I'm looking for?
how much do they run for usually?

rust won't be to much of a problem hopefully for me although it rains every now ad then but I don't go roading.
I'm leaning towards magna just because eeryonr sys it sounds good and that deep low spun I'm looking for.
but anyone know how much they cost?
also what is the differnce between 2.5" and 3" and 2.25" ???

Yeah 2.25 to 2.5 is good for a n/a Runner you'll only want 3" + for if you go F/I (S/c or Turbo setup). but I'd recommend Magnaflow to anyone they make great systems and have a great deep tone

Yeah I had a 2.5 on my 96 3.4 Taco and did notice alot more in my low end and off the line. But say you actually plan on adding the s/c later on then I'd stick w/ the 2.5 that way that's one less thing you have to replace, again. also I highly doubt if there is a loss of power by going 2.5" plus you could make it up somewhere else to even it out: ie header(s)
I myself am looking into getting the TRD s/c setup but I'm also trying to stick close to Toyota factory as possible w/ this one (not drag racing a 4runner, lol)

haha now I'm confused 2.5 would be okay too?
I'm going to check pricing this weekend
is just buying muffler first then piping later make a differnecw?
like will it be bad? should I just get it all at once?
having dual out or single out make a difference?

if you dont really care too much about performance..get a 3" system..with a Cherrybomb EXTREME..
now the 3" wont be the best for power at any RPM range..but it will be a HELLUVA lot deeper in tone..
i heard a 4.3 vortec (i know not a 3.4 but still...V6)..with a 2.25 system that dumped under the bed before the rear axle with a flowtech raptor..and it sounded pretty nice..
i then heard the same truck with a 3in exhaust and flowtech raptor dumed before the axle..and it was 50x's deeper..and sounded EXTREMELY good..
get on youtube and look around at everybody's exhaust sounds on their 3.4's..that'll kinda give you an idea..

I'd recommend, for performance reasons, sticking w/ a single outlet since you can retain the stock hangers if you choose also cost wise it costs alot less to do a single outlet.
And yeah it seems odd to hear the performance loss between a Taco w/ the same 3.4L as the 4runner but the easy way to explain it due to A/F mapping on the ECU, which can be changed via a APEXi SAFC and not sure if and what companies make reflashes to remap the system and keep from having the dreaded Check Engine Light from causing your auto-fail on emissions (in most states)

its not recommend to go any size bigger on the exhaust with a n/a 3.4L as for the dual outs its alot of extra work to make it look right plus you have to lose the spare tire

I see everyone talking about flowmaster 40 series, does anyone have a Borla muffler? I am just waiting for my magnaflow cat to come in before I upgrade to a 2.5" with a Borla Pro xs.
