2nd Gen rear speakers

:pig:
Anybody know if 6x9 speakers will fit in the rear speaker panels of the 2nd gen 4runners. Anybody have any suggestions for speakers back there? One more thing... Anybody have tweeters in the front?, if so where are they located?
Thanks guys

I'm not sure on the size of the rear speakers, by rear do you mean the pair down by the storage boxes, or the pair up near the ceiling on the sides of the rear window? I believe that the ones up near the ceiling are smaller (could be wrong). I really don't know if there are any tweeters in the front, there might be, but I honestly have no idea.

As far as suggestions for speakers, I have Alpines through out (2 in front, and the 4 in back) and I'm running an Alpine CD Player (Sorry don't know the model off hand, it cost me like $120) and the stock amp that's in there, and I must say that the sound system absolutely rocks!!! Although it would be much better if I got a nice amp, and a good sub in the back :rockin: But I'm very happy with my setup right now. I can crank the volume up to level 19/20 without any problems or distortion of any kind (I think my stereo's volume goes up to around 30 or 40, never tested it; but 18 is VERY Loud, and you can hear every word crystal clearly :rockin: :bigok: So in my opinion you can't go wrong with Alpine. When I get my new stereo (Probably sometime soon, I think mine has a little too much dust in it from the desert, because it has a hard time reading my CDs sometimes, and it's been skipping a lot. Tried cleaning it, no change :( ) I'm probably going to go with another Alpine, or maybe a Kenwood or Sony. Depending on which one I like.

Goodluck with your system :) It seems like 4Runners are made to have killer stereos in them :rockin:

Hi Brad.
For ideas on tweeters in a 2nd gen, you can see where mine are located on my stereo page.

They sound very nice where they are located as they are just forward of me, and the treble travels upward to my ears.

The URL is below in my sig file.

My tweeters are located on the door pillar right where it bends from the top of the door to the windshield slope. This is a great position for them seeing as they are directed straight towards you and are in no way blocked by the dash (i.e. if you put them on the door panel where the mirrors are)

The rear speakers are 5-1/4" speakers. They just fit and I am not quite sure that 6x9s will fit there. The tweeters in the back are around 1". If I were to put tweeters in the front, I would put the on the black triangle in the front. They would be a perfect spot to put them. Goodluck. :fireman:

If you want to put tweeters in the front. I would recommend either in a kick panel in the door down lower or in the upper part of the door near the triangle piece facing the center of you wind shield. By making them face the center of the wind shield you are evening out the sound from your ear. If you have them facing you one is about a foot from your ear while the other is across the car causing the balance to be all wrong. Trust me if you compete the sound must be even and across the dash like a stage. Good Luck.

Speaker size

Here is what is behind the side panel in a '93 Runner. The speaker is a 4", not 5 1/4" - unless 94's and 95's had something different. It is in a powered-ported enclosure.

Here is the front

here is the back

Hope this helps.

Two of my buddies have 6X9's back there but they had to cut the plastic grill out and mount the speaker right to the plastic. It looks clean and works great. I plan on doing it to mine soon.
