2nd Gen Airbox Mod

I just did the Airbox Mod on my 93 4runner last night. Took about a half hour and was well worth it in my opinion. You get a nice deep sound when you give it some gas and it seems to have added a bit of power. Not a ton, but it's free horsepower.

If you want to try it here's the link:

i am thinking of doing it too. but i dont know if i should drill holes and how many or if i should cut the whole bottom out. I think i would rather drill holes in the box, but does that mean the more holes the better??

i did that mod shortly after purchasing my 93, took about 45 mins and followed the hole pattern shown in the link above. the sound is pretty cool and it seems to jump a bit better off the line although i have no way of telling for sure! if you dont like it, you can always pick up a used box at the local wrecker and replace it. one banana mod!

I just drilled holes exactly like the picture from the link. I don't feel comfortable with the whole bottom cut out.

did you guys notice any difference in mpg from drilling a few holes and removing the intake hose from the box? reason I ask is with the 3rd gen guys doing the deckplate mod, some of them say it messed up their gas mileage...

the jury is still out on any mileage issues. im averaging 400-425 kms (248-264 miles) per tank city driving. the highway is much better at 550-600 kms (341-372 miles) per tank. i didnt track the mpg before i did the mod. bad me! this is pretty close to what i was getting with my 86 runner 22re 5 spd with a leaking seal in the front somewhere and a head gasket that has been 'going' for the last year and a half. its amazing what you can do with those GM leak stop tabs! sadly, the 86 is being parted out and being sent to a final resting place to be picked over.

Here is how I did my pattern for reference.
When you drill it, make sure you clean out ALL the little bits left behind.

have any of you guys adjusted your airflow meter afterwards? I've read that when you have more air going in u need to adjust it a bit to make the engine run a bit richer..

Well, here is mine for reference as well. There has been no change at all in gas mileage. It seems like it pulls a little harder at high rpm but I wouldn't swear to it. Makes a cool sound though. :hillbill:

Here's mine.

I cut between the two mounting bolts and took out that hole side and part of the bottom. It faces the fender so I'm not worried about getting water in it.
