Looks like a fun project, whats the power goals? What transmission are you using?

Why not turbo the engine you have now instead? I considered both options and using what you already have came out cheaper and much easier everytime unless going for big power like 600whp+ and even then the cost was basically a wash.

i feel like if he had a 3rz and turboed it he would get worse gas milage then that 2jz and a junk yard turbo istall for a 3rz is around the same price for that 2jz

The 2jz is not exactly known for it's good gas mileage. IS300's which have the latest and greatest version of it struggle to get 20mpg in a car.

I added up the costs for a 2jz swap when I was seriously considering it. The cheapest I came up with was 3k-4k+ depending on how much the engine was and having done these kinds of swaps I know the price is always higher then you think going in.

You then have the issues of wiring and trying to get it to work with the rest of the truck (when I swap something everything works like OEM after I am done), plus the OBDII issues with inspection among other things. Basically I came up with more money, more hassle and more time vs just using what I had.

You can get a turbo setup put together for a heck of a lot less then that. The setup I have planned for my 5vz should be WELL under $2k all said and done depending on what turbo you went with.

All that said a 2jz swap is still very cool and I look forward to seeing it completed, was just curious for the reasoning behind not using the stock engine.

HAHAHAHAHAAA. Made me laugh had the money live in michigan nobody around here with exception of maybe a few know a thing about 2jz's let alone having twin turbo. So cost not really the issue more so for the wow factor yall again Im not the most bad to the bone builder but again I would not have even consider doing this without having some background. My thoughts of the (4Reaper) lol is a nasty 500-600 hp 2x4 dune ripper as well as a whopping 7 mile a day work to home commute. I have done some looking into suspensions and am keeping around 4". The trim and running boards will be removed in which the rock crusher rocker gaurds will be installed in their place. Bushwacker pocket flares for the fenders. I am keeping the a340e for the simple fact of being able to commute. Also if anyone has some good exhaust quotes I would be interested. As far as everything else goes we will get to that bridge when we get there. Lol thank y'all for your interest in the build the engine is shipped and will be delivered to the house on Wednesday wwoooooooohhoooooooo

Settle down now, I dont want to have to call someones probation officer again do I?

Texas_Ace 02-22-2013 06:28 PM

Not bad sounds like fun! 500whp+ in a 4runner is my goal although I will be AWD. It was hard enough to hook up 300whp in AWD, much less 2wd, that was a joke.

Only issue I see is the A340, unless you will be using the supra turbo auto AND having it built I don't see the transmission holding up to that kind of power in a 4runner. Mine blew with just ~275-300whp in a whopping ~10k miles.

I had it built and added a high stall converter (HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended BTW) but I still don't think I would trust it past ~400whp, it was still not all that confident at the 300whp level IMO.

Far as the exhaust goes custom is basically your only option for a swap like that. Find some good local shops and get some quotes.

Don't think so, the 4runner was dynoed at ATS, my other cars have been on various dynos over the years depending on who would make me the best deal on dyno time lol.

So what version of the A340 are you going to use, the truck transmission or the supra?

96 DuneRunner 02-22-2013 09:52 PM

Supra trans

Pretty sure I heard the same thing when I was looking for stronger options, the supra trans would only work with 2wd trucks though so that was not an option for me.

Got to remember that you will be moving an extra ~1000lb+ vs a supra so there is a LOT more stress on the transmission. So whatever you are told it should hold, subtract a chunk from it.

warpigg 02-24-2013 11:30 AM

supras way alot though there like 3200lbs my 4runner with me in it weighs 3800 or so from what the junk yard said, and if its 2 wheel drive it wont have the front diff or trasfercase, although the 2jz is a heavy motor. and are you planing on going longtraivl on the front since you want to make it like a prerunner of sorts?

You must have a stripper model 4runner, I weighed mine and it came out at ~4500lb.

warpigg 02-24-2013 02:36 PM

that was compeltly empty and i have no spare tire and like half a exhaust and it was a junk yard so im sure its not exact but my dads 99 4 door taco weighed 4400, but i know for sure my runner weighs less then 4000
