$28 inclinometer

well i was just looking around on the internet for the best price on a reciever shackle and came across this inclinometer.

http://www.4by4connection.com/clinometer.html

i was wondering how hard you guys think it would be to open this thing up and make a little photo shop thing of a 4runner for it?

OicnaiC Dec 12, 2003 11:12 PM

They make 'em with a pick up too

4x4Lamm Dec 13, 2003 09:08 AM

I am!

I am doing the same thing! I bought the pickup but really wanted a 4runner or even an suv shape. The thing comes apart with like two screws and that exposes the dials 100% Maybe someone with a Toyota clinometer could do the same and scan the dials on it. If you could make the graphic it would be a snap. Just print it on some label paper, cut it out, stick it on and you are done.

KevyWevy Dec 13, 2003 09:15 AM

2 srews eh? sweet. i may just have to buy it and do that then. i even ended up finding some cheaper ones later.

4x4Lamm Dec 13, 2003 09:29 AM

Yup, remove the screws, the black housing pulls apart and the white nylon assembly and brass weights with dials falls right out. Reassembly is just as easy. If you make the decals let me know, I might want to buy some off you if that would be cool with you too.

hummm

maybe we could find out the manufacture and soo IF, they would put a 4Runner (or just a suv) on there, im sure alot of us would by them, i know i would replace mine. so any of you still have the box it came in ?

4x4Lamm Dec 13, 2003 09:36 AM

I t was a blister package actually, I think it was sub-manufactured but the top dog was Smittybuilt.

KevyWevy Dec 13, 2003 10:00 AM

well i think i might just have to buy one today, and see what my friend and i can do with photo shop. :D i'll definetly let you guys know how they turn out and i would probably even make you one for free 4x4lam!

rwmorrisonjr Dec 13, 2003 03:49 PM

Thats' the one I'm looking for. Where did you find it for less money? I like the SUV pic idea too.

KevyWevy Dec 13, 2003 04:25 PM

this is where i ended up buying mine today. a few bucks less....

Good Choice

That is where I got mine from, no probs at all. Keep me posted.

rwmorrisonjr Dec 13, 2003 06:45 PM

Cool. Is it small enough to mount in the ashtray area of a 3rd Gen? I'd like it down there b/c I'm getting a new head unit next week and moving the CB into the lower DIN slot. PLus I already have a GPS & radar detector on the dash so I'm getting cluttered!:D

4x4Lamm Dec 13, 2003 06:56 PM

yea but...

It is small enough but it is non adjustable. You must mount it right and tilt it to get the dials to read 0 on the flat ground. I had a ashtray mounted cb and had it stuck to the bottem of the cb and it was all but impossibel to use, as specialy with my 5speed. I'm not too farmiller with the 3rd gen but i bet a better spot would be below the rearview mirror or where they put the little oil change stickers.

KevyWevy Dec 17, 2003 09:06 PM

ok so i got my clinometer today. :D got it all opened up and the only thing that will change with the 4Runner sticker or whatever i decide to do is that i don't think it will still light up as much. 4x4lam, how usefull is the light in it? i'll see what my friend and i can do in photoshop tomorrow hopefully.:D

4x4Lamm Dec 18, 2003 12:10 PM

light

That light is positivly average. Mine burnt out after like a week too. I just figure, how badly am I going to need to know my $Runners precise roll and pitch angles at night. Kind of a scary thought if you ask me. I bet a paper decal over it would still let some light shine through or the bulb could be replaced with a brighter one or you could wire it for two bulbs.

KevyWevy Dec 18, 2003 03:52 PM

im thinking about just ripping the little light out.

4x4Lamm Dec 18, 2003 04:08 PM

yeah

I never use it at night and it was kind of a nusiance where I had it, always glowing in my face. It was a pain to hard-wire too. Keep me posted.

934rnr Dec 18, 2003 09:28 PM

Why not use a colored LED in the housing instead of a light bulb?
You could always wire the current light up to your dash lights then you would be able to dim it.

Spectre Dec 19, 2003 03:00 AM

I am looking into getting one of these ( I can not afford a toyota one) and was wondering, are these jeep ones like old WWI gunnery Clinometers? Is it none powered for it to work? is it based on springs and weights? and the only power needed is for the light? or are there sensors that need powered?
Thanks,
Todd

midiwall Dec 19, 2003 05:27 AM

Okay... I just ordered mine (gotta wanna hadta!) and chose the "jeep" graphic to begin with. I'm thinking about pulling it apart, removing the graphic and re-mounting the jeep upside down. :)

I'll also look into replacing the incadescent bulb with maybe a blue LED through a diffuser.

Thanks for the link you guys!
