22RE Guy's What * of timming do you use?

Hey guys just wanted to get a base line of what everyones set up is. At what * of timming do you have your motor set for and what octain gas are you running on with the timming set point? Just curious. I have mine set for 5* running 87 Octain. I had pinging problems and retarded the timming, I just did a complete tune up, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and thought I might be able to get better results by advancing it again.

Great question!

I've been having the pinging problem, too, on my 93 4x4 with 68k miles.

I tried all the standard stuff to stop pinging: make sure it's running cool enough, cooler heat range plugs, checked knock sensor, distributor, etc.

This weekend I decided to pull my entire intake, clean my fuel injectors by hand, and check the intake valves. I cleaned some partially-clogged injectors (which can cause a leaner condition on that cylinder = PING), and also soaked and cleaned the backs of the intake valves with GM Top Engine Cleaner. Cranked it up yesterday with about 80% of the ping gone!! After driving it 40 miles this morning and blowing out more of the intake valve crap I loosened yesterday, I could hardly even hear a single ping, going uphill in 5th gear, on cheap gas, with the pedal to the floor.

To answer your question, I'm at stock 5 deg BTDC timing, but I want to get 2-3 more degrees before I'm happy :-) Combustion chamber deposits are probably the remaining culprits.

Otherwise runs like new (actually better).

Hope this helps.

P.s.

BTW, advancing it again without fixing the cause of yourping will just cause it to ping 10x worse.

I run 5* with the computer shorted - that's how you're supposed to set it. I have no idea what it is without the computer shorted...maybe somewhere around 10*.
