2001 4runner SR5 with 178,000 miles

I am looking at a '01 4runner wi 178,000 miles for $8900. I drove it and it responded very well. The body is in very good condition. The carfax had the usual oil change here inspection there, so I really don't put much stock in it. My question is, is 178,000 miles way too much to be buying this vehicle. I know that Toyotas will go forever but realistically how many miles is too many? I have done some searching of the forum and every says that they are great and their vehicles are running great at 200,000+, however I don't want to purchase a vehicle and get 20,000 out of it and then it have major issues. Thanks for the info.

I just got my 2000 limited 125k miles for 7400.00.

Sounds like a nice 4Runner, but priced a bit high. Of course, that depends on options (4WD? V6? Auto trans? Rear locking diff?) and your location. You left these important variables out of your post.

I purchased my 1998 Limited 4WD with 159,000 miles for $5,500 3 years ago here in Oklahoma, though it needed a bit of work. If the 2001 you're looking at has 4WD and a V6, I'd say it would go for around $7,500 here in Oklahoma.

Many 3rd generation 4Runners make it well beyond 300,000 miles before needing an engine or auto trans rebuild. Someone else may want to chime in here; didn't the 2001 4Runners have occasional automatic transmission failures? As I recall, this was a rare issue but still happened to some 2001 models here and there. At 178,000 miles there is a chance that this would have already occurred if it was going to and someone else has fixed it?

Its 4WD, V6, Auto. Not sure about the differential and I am in Missouri.

I'd say $7,500ish - but I haven't been in the market for a few years.
