2001 4runner 3.4 auto 99 taco 3.4 auto can I swap trannys?

So I have a 2001 4runner it has the center diff lock awd stuff and the transmission is junk. I have a good transmission out of a 1999 Tacoma can these be swapped? Physically I believe they are the same. The question is how about electronically? Can it be done if so how? Or is it time to 5 spd swap which would be ideal but not cost effective unless all other options are exhausted.

Maybe call up Toyota parts and ask about the electronic differences or better, google or look up both transmission parts (as if you were buying them online) and compare what you see.
Or look up transmission removal procedures for both and see where the differences are.

Post there came to the same hunch you had, but no one could answer definitively...4 yrs ago. So in case the short way doesn't work, you at least have a lead to help figure it out.
I read many posts on the conv to manual, so its more definitive. Costs more up front but I think in the long run, manuals are cheaper to maintain and easier to fix.
