I did try the 99 "tall" coils in the back and I actually wound up with a reverse rake... the 906s are perfect. The 99 coils also sagged with any load in the rear, the 906s hold up much better. There is a little bit of rake, but that's ok with me (rear is about .5 inches higher)

Hey, your setup looks like a perfect height for me. At 105K I just put 50 lbs of sub/amp in the back and juuuusssstttt enough for it to un-level it in the bad way! It's bothering me every time I look at the truck. I'll being going with your recommendations when I get some downtime.

One question, how much would you say it raised the truck compared to stock? Oh, also, where did you get the 99 springs?

Stock 2000 Setup:
F - 34"
R - 34.25"

99 Coil & 906 OME Setup:
F - ~36"
R - ~37"


I picked up the 99 coils from Sonoran Steel.

shock/spring replacement w Bilstein HDs

Hey there, also in northern, VA and just ordered the Bistein HDs for front and rear, 145k miles, 1998 4wd, 16" stock wheels, may look to tow something light in future.

On trdparts4u.com, it stated: "OME coils can only be installed with OME nitrocharger shocks."
What did you pay for the 906's?

How much are the stock 99 springs and where did you go for the fronts? Will they work on my 98? How did your rear shock removal go too?

Hey Jim...

I picked up the 906s from Toytec... just check their website for latest prices. The 99 coils I picked up from Steve at Sonoran Steel. You shouldn't have any issues running the 99 coils on your 98.

Removing the rear shocks wasn't that bad... I did use the sawzall method though and just cut the shock in half at the mounting stud, quick and easy.

99 coil part #s

Do you know what the correct part # is for the front 99 coils? Sonoran told me to contact the dealer.

The dealer has several Part #s. Im also on 16" stock rims up front, need to recheck the tire size

1999 SPRINGS:
Front Right Coil - Blue / Yellow (48131-35400) Passenger Side
Front Left Coil - Blue / Pink (48131 - 35350) Driver Side
Rear Coil - Yellow / Red (48231 - 35210)

Hi,


I have a 1999 4Runner SR5 3.4 Auto and one of the rear shocks has recently broken. I noticed that the back end was bouncing quite a lot and there was a clunk noise when I went over bumps so I took a quick look and noticed that the shock was actually broken (came away from the top mount). So I need to replace at least the rear shocks and am looking for advice on what shocks are best for my purposes...

First off I need to mention that I do not drive this vehicle off road at all, occasionally I do venture on some fairly rough back roads off the beaten path but nothing too serious. Most of the time I am on decent paved roads to/from work etc and sometimes I also tow a small boat.

So, for my usage what shocks would you recommend?

Anyone run the 5100 adjustables (D558) with the TRD tundra front coils? Already got the 5100's and they are squishy, trying to stiffen the ride up.

Two things are wrong with that picture. The D558 shocks do not even provide enough dampening for 4Runner springs on a 4runner. A heavier stiffer spring will need even MORE dampening to ride correctly. Using Tundra springs, you would be going the wrong way. Your front end would bounce like a riced out Civic on cut springs and blown struts when you went over bumps.

Second, tundra springs are bigger diameter than 4runner/Taco springs. They won't fit the top hat correctly, and I'm pretty sure the perch isolator won't fit either.

Update!

It took a while but I saved enough money to buy some OME struts (Shocks + 881's) to go with my rears. Ill put some pics up when the whole thing is installed. Ill be replacing the 5100's (D558's) that I used up front. I personally didn't like them because of the softness but I think they might be decent if you didn't do OME in the rear as they are stiff shocks/springs. Ill have the 5100's with the springs and top plates for sale as an assembled unit soon if anyone wants them for their taco or runner, they will have less that 3k on the shocks and the springs are good. Looking forward to seeing the difference in the handling, will post soon.

Just an FYI - those are not struts, they are coils over springs.

gp - they technically are struts. A strut is just the term for the spring/shock absorber combination.

Not to quibble but what I'm buying is absolutely a strut. Coil overs are traditionally ride height adjustable and once they wear out you can rebuild them. What I am buying is neither adjustable or rebuildable.

I've got a 2000 4runner as well and was thinking about doing a slight lift. Adding new springs sounds like a great idea. I already got Bilstein HD shocks in the rear which I added when one of the shocks broke a while ago. Based on all your recommendations, it sounds like a good idea to add the OME 906 springs to the rear but I'm wondering what would be the best (and cheapest) setup for the front? I tow a small tent trailer in the summer and also do some occasional off-roading as well. Do I need a whole new setup up front or could I just add the Tundra Bilstein 5100 Ride Adjustable shocks?

Update

Got my new OME struts installed today and I cant believe the freaking difference. The ride is so much better with matching shocks and springs. I would totally recommend the OME stuff but dont mix and match it with other manufacturers, go OME throughout. Heres some pics, the Bilsteins I pulled are for sale, only 3k on them, they are soft if that's what you're looking for, will be selling them as a complete strut.

I dont know whats up with the Tundra Billies, I wouldn't recommend the Tacoma ones though. If you've got the HD's in the rear I would use them up front as well. For springs, the 906's with the 881's are what I have and they are stellar. The 906's should handle a small trailer with no trouble. I would really suggest not mixing and matching components as they are going to behave differently regardless of what they say they are for. The OME shocks dampen much differently than the Billies. They are both good but when you have shocks dampening at different rates it make the ride feel weird, same thing with springs that have different spring rates. The OME stuff is stiffer than stock but its still comfortable to drive, I love it personally. If you do the HD's with the stock springs that should work but if your ass is sagging like everyone else's the 906's are a must then you'll want to do the 881's as well, spring rates........hope this helps, post in here with what you decide on if you dont mind.
