2000 ltd grey wire mod questions
As the title says I have a 2000 ltd 4runner and I want to do the grey wire mod. I did all the searching and found more than enough info to proceed. I found the wiring that goes to 4wd computer but was confused by the number of wires that are in the actual plug(more than 8). There is a grey wire but there are more wires than the mod instructions that I was using showed. So I decided to stop with the mod until I could maybe get some info/help from someone who has done this mod with a 2000 ltd 4runner.
Thanks in advance for any pointers, Paul |
Nobody has any input?

I did this mod on my 04 tacoma. The wire was a differnet color than what was instructed but in the same location on the plug. It works and I had no issues.

I think on some of the 4Runners it's a Blue/Red wire that needs to be grounded. I have a 2000 4Runner limited and that's what I grounded.
My locked will work in any mode. Will only engage if going 5 mph or less. I read there is another wire that you can ground to allow you to engage it at any speed but I'm not sure which wire it is. koda4 |

where is the 4x4 box located on the 4runners. i read the write up on the tacos but my box is not in the same location.

never mind that was a stupid question. the box in the tacomas just looks different so that threw me off. but i just finished the grey wire mod and that thing does some good cookies now lol

I found that when I ground the Blue/Red that the axle also engages on my Limited which has the push button 4WD.. Anyone completed this mod for a Limited?

just a heads up. |
I did this on my Limited. Works the same :)

I will double check - though I am certain that I have grounded the ECU and not the lead from the transfercase.
Let me know how yours goes, guitarplayer360. |
let me know how yours goes too. maybe i misunderstood your post....what exactly do you mean the axle engages? your locker?

The 96 Limited has a 4WD button on the transfer case lever. The transfer case lever has two positions H and L4. H4 occurs when the 4WD button is pressed, and the transfer case lever is in H.
I believe the models other than the Limited have a transfer case lever with 2 Hi, 4Hi, N and 4Lo - they are not electronically engaging 4WD. My terminology may be a bit messed, but since Toyota has eliminated the the automatic hubs in favour of the ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect), when you press the 4wd button, you can hear the mechanism in the front axle engage. It sounds similar to the clunk from the locker engaging while in 4Low. When I ground the blue/red wire from the 4WD ECU, (not the wire from the transfer case, but actually grounding the wire into the ECU), with the e locker button not pressed (i.e. e locker not engaged), the 4WD indicator comes on and I can hear the front axle engage the ADD. I am wondering if there is a different way to bypass the e locker for a Limited, or if I need to sort it out on my end. |
I have a 97 Lt. and I followed the instructions and had no problems.
IIRC <<<<< there are two boxes near the kick panel. One is green and one is black. Make sure you go with the black box. |

The green box is your overall 4wd computer, black box is just for the locker. not too sure about this. it's interesting. let me know if you get it figured out. the locker ecu im installing in mine has completely different wires (from a tacoma), so its going to be a hassel to install. |
Moral of the story: Don't do things in a hurry at night.
I did the mod to the green box...here are photos of what I changed it to: http://clearcomm.ca/4Runner/001.jpg Close up of the Black box: http://clearcomm.ca/4Runner/002.jpg Tested it and it works great! |
great! Props to etc. for bringing that up. Not sure how I didnt catch that...
have fun with it man. |
"Grey Wire Mod"
I have a 2001 SR5 with the 4wd button on the transfer case knob and isn't the locker a center diff locker? Is there any issue with that vs a rear locker? I am doing this mod today and was wondering if there is any issue with the locker not being in the rear? And finally, is the 4Runner "grey" wire actually the Blue/red wire? I will post pictures of the mod and do a write up later. Wish me luck.

"Grey Wire Mod"
Is there a risk of destroying your differential by pressing your locker at high speeds? Seems like it would be the same as dropping it into drive after redlining the engine? Any thoughts?
I tried the mod and THIS happened |
