2000 4Runner Key Reprograming?

Hi,
I love this site, I have only been here a few times while shopping for my new ride, but have now logged on.

I have just purchased a 2000 4Runner Limited 4WD. Problem is there is only one key and remote. I bought a remote at ebay, and found some instructions in an earlier thread here that I plan to try regarding reprogramming it.

I have read a few discussions regarding the keys with chips in them. It turns out that I have one of those.
1. Is there another source besides Toyota for them?
2. Is there a way to reprogram that key myself?

Thanks in advance for any and all advise!

Do a search on Ebay for: Transponder Key
I am looking into this as well, and have found them for $25, I'm not sure if it will work, but I got my extra remote from ebay and it worked ok. The guy will also give you the programming directions.
Oh yeah, I hope you have the "master" key (has a black, plastic head) it is necessary to program the new key. Good luck

Yes,
I have one good key and one good remote. I am just trying to get a second set. I have purchased a remote from e-bay and am thinking of going that route with the key. Hopefully it will work okay with their instructions. Dealer wants $45 to buy the key and $37.50 to program.

Let me know how yours turns out and I will do so with mine.

Thanks.

The reprogramming worked great!! I followed the instructions below to ADD the remote to my existing remote. Mail me if you have questions.

4Runner Remote Reprogramming
Start registration of recognition code. The vehicle should be in the following conditions:
1. The key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
2. Drivers door is open (other doors are closed)
3. Drivers door is unlocked
Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder, then pull it out

Within 40 secs.
Press the manual door lock control switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1. Lock / unlock
2. Lock / unlock
3. Lock / unlock
4. Lock / unlock
5. Lock / unlock

Close the drivers door, then open it.
Again Press the manual door lock control switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1. Lock / unlock
2. Lock / unlock
3. Lock / unlock
4. Lock / unlock
5. Lock / unlock

Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder.
Turn the ignition switch from on to lock at approx. 1 sec. intervals
1 to 5 times to select the mode.

Add Mode ON - LOCK change occurs 1 times
Rewrite mode ON - LOCK change occurs 2 times
Confirmation mode ON - LOCK change occurs 3 times
Prohibition mode ON - LOCK change occurs 5 times

Pull out the key plate from the ignition key cylinder
When add mode or rewrite mode is selected.
Body ECU automatically performs the LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at 1 sec. interval to inform the operator that either the add mode or rewrite mode has been selected
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once indicates that add mode has been selected
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice indicates that rewrite mode has been selected

Press the lock and unlock switches on the transmitter switch simultaneously for less then 1.5 sec.
Again press either of switches on the transmitter switch for more than 1 sec.
Body ECU automatically performs LOCK-UNLOCK operation once or twice at a 1 sec interval to inform the operator that it has received the signal from the transmitter

LOCK-UNLOCK occurs once - registration of recognition code is completed
LOCK-UNLOCK occurs twice - registration of recognition code has not been completed.
Recognition code received first time and second time did not match.
If they are not performed, the mode returns to the normal mode, then start with start registration of recognition code.

Proceed to finish registration
If even one of the following conditions is satisfied, registration of recognition codes in completed.
-40 seconds elapses since the body ECU response
-the driver’s door is closed
-the key plate is inserted in the ignition key cylinder.

Did you ever program your remote? I too bought one off ebay and got the programming instructions. The only thing is i can not find the ECU Control Unit. The instructions said it should be underneith the drivers seat but it is not. Where did you find yours? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ben,
I bought and reprogrammed the remote. Follow the instructions above. You do not need to know where the unit is. You just have to jump through all the hoops in the proper order. Remember, you want to ADD a remote to your unit. So only do the key lock- on sequence once to ADD the remote. The manual part of the instructions refers to the button or lever at the top of the drivers door.

Below are the instructions I just used to sucessfully reprogram a freshly cut transponder key blank I purchased on e-bay on my 4Runner. This method is supposed to work on 1998-2001 Models.

4Runner Key Programming
Add Duplicate Key

1.Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2.Insert master key into ignition
3.Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4.Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5.Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6.Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7.After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8.Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

Thanks for posting this info.

I bought a '00 Ltd Runner & never tested the spare key; when I tested it today it did not start the runner.

I got the spare key programmed on the first try.

Thanks.

I just got 2 keys on ebay for a total of $35 including shipping. I had them cut at the dealer today and plan on programming them as soon as it stops raining.

Good to see it is working for you all...

Where did you guys get your remote from? Luckily, my 2002 Sport does not have an immobilizer, so I can just use cut keys from Home Depot, but I do want another remote.

Do you guys know if a key fob from a Highlander or Sequoia will work? Or from a 2003+ 4Runners?

Thanks.

Cycles twice won't accept remotes

Hello, I have tried this several times but the locks cycle twice and won't accept the remote. I have purchased a total of three remotes with the same part number, new battteries with no luck. The orgional remote still works with the 99 4runner. Anyone out there have this problem or know how to fix it.
Thanks
