1985 Celica 22r - 1987 4Runner - Engine Swap

What kind of mods would be involved in dropping a 1985 Celica (22r or re) motor into a 1987 4Runner? The 4runner has automatic transmission and came with 22re. Anything different within the fuel system setup?
Etc... Etc... Stuff I might need to keep in mind ... yada ... yada (or yota .. yota).
Thanks!

BUMP ... may be buying Celica for engine tomorrow.

Secret Squirell 08-11-2004 12:01 AM

Anybody??

jimbo74 08-11-2004 12:06 AM

if the engine in the celica is a 22r with a carb, you will run into some fuel delivery problems their as the carbed ones used a mechanical fuel pump versus electric with efi

Can that be corrected? Say ... via fuel pressure regulator of some sort?

jimbo74 08-11-2004 12:15 AM

well you could always put a blockoff plate on the engine and add an electric fuel pump...

whats the point of the swap? to replace with efi? or carb? or blown engine? what are your outlooks for it? to have a carb? or just running? or have efi?

Secret Squirell 08-11-2004 12:30 AM

Need a working, affordable, engine. Either with or without efi. Whatever works until I can afford to rebuild original motor (to beefed up specs).

kyle_22r 08-11-2004 12:40 PM

just unbolt the manifolds from the celica motor and bolt the ones from the 4runner on. simple as that(for the most part)

95_4X4Runner 08-11-2004 06:06 PM

I would think it'd be easy to bolt up an '85 22RE in an '87 pickup. '85 is when Toyota added the knock sensor to the 22RE, so it should be basically the same as the '87 you're replacing.

22r was sold!!! Check out my "other thread" https://www.yotatech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38680

Check your states smog laws...

In Virginia the "new" engine must be newer than the "old" engine and all smog plumbing/control must be used fron the new engine..

Have seen some sweat rides for sale but the were not documented for DMV so they couldn't be tagged..

If yo don't have emmission testing/inspection now... you will someday..

Good Point.

Nevermind ... Japan Auto Wreckers Web Site out of date .... nothing but cores left.

kyle_22r 08-14-2004 01:27 PM

and there's no way to really tell an '85-88 or so 22RE apart. i think '89 is when they got the new style upper plenum

85 should be the same block as what is in your runner. shouldn't be anything but a typical swap. make sure to use your original manifolds and distributor. though. i bought an 85 4runner and someone had put an 84 celica motor in it and the distributor wouldn't work with the 85 computer so i had to buy an electronic advance distributor.

Hey ... thinking about putting in a 225 V-6 Buick lol. The engine came as a spare for a boat I bought. Previous owner says it runs good ... out of an older Jeep (1967 I think).
Just a thought.

kyle_22r 08-16-2004 04:15 PM

maybe a spare anchor :hillbill:

don't think there's much going for the old dauntless these days. you can get engine mounts and a conversion bellhousing to bolt it up, but it's kind of outdated. if you wanted to put a buick engine in, i think a 3.8 would be a better idea

Was a thought. I'm funny that way .... it's not neccessarily that I want a Buick engine ... just an unusual 4Runner ... one that runs and I need the extra garage space. I could probably save up for one of those lucious rebuilt motors (LC or otherwise) but $2,000 seems kind of high and the prices I've been getting for remaned engines aren't much better. Everytime I think I've located a decent running used 22r / re it turns out to be a piece o' crap or the shipping prices are more than the engine. I'll keep looking around (local) and it will keep part of my garage occupied. :nopity:

Call TAP Recycling.....I deal with them almost exclusively. They warrenty all parts for 12 months. I have ordered an engine for my '93 Celica from them in the past. The engine ended up dying on me and they send me another one and still going strong.

As far as the Celica engine, it would have worked just fine. I have a 22RE in the '83 Celica and it's the same thing. I have a friend with a truck with the same engine.

Anyway, TAP Recycling.
