Toyota~Boys SAS pickup build
As you all may have noticed I don't have a year or model listed in my subject. The reason being is I have three trucks that are going to become one. May include more I don't know yet.
To get started here's my donor rigs.....,,
1988 2wd pickup. Purchased for $300.00
1987 4wd pickup. My daily driver about $5000.00
1985 4wd pickup..... Completely rusted $400.00
Here's what I'm working with:
My daily driver (the 87) has been in WestVirginia all its life. The frame has been patched several times and its about ready to scrap. Although everything else is perfect.
The 88 2wd is from Georgia so it's really never seen salt nor snow. The frame is 100% perfect but the truck was rolled. So all I have here is 2wd drivetrain, perfect frame, and a excellent 22r engine with only 67,254.2 original miles......
The 85 is once again a WestVirginia truck. So yeah the frame is junk beyond repairs. The motor in the 85 is blown and cab is rusted to beyond repairs. Although everything else is complete and in good condition.
Here is my plans:
Im going to SAS the 2wd using the 85 front axle. Im going to swap all body parts from my 87 over to the 88. I'm unsure if im going to use my 87 trans or the 85 trans. My 87 has a W56 the 85 has a g58. Both are good trannies. Either way i have just about everything that I need.
Here's exactly what I've done so far:
The 88 has been completely stripped down to the frame. Special thanks to those on here that bought some of the stuff off the 88. And of coursed I've acquired my donor rigs.
I still have quite a bit of stuff to purchase as this is not going to be a instant project. My line of work is highly limited due to weather. So money is real tight right now.
I still need the following:
SAS kit
High steer
Rear matching lift
Probably much more but that is the basics
Now here's a few questions that I need help on.
I wanna run 35's however I may run 37's later. All I have is a 1" body lift. Everything else must be achieved with suspension. I refuse to go larger then a 1" BL. Before I buy my SAS kit I'd like to know which springs will accommodate my 35's and soon to be 37's. keep in mind that I'm not rich. I have a family of 6 including me. My wife works with me in my small business so our money isn't all that great. Does any SAS guys have any advise. Things they would had done different. Why does everyone move there axles so far forward when SASing? Do you have to do this? If its recommended whats the minimum you can go? All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Well, I've pieced my sas stuff together from multiple vendors, not the cheapest route to go, but I think I got all the pieces that I really want to keep it low and still flexy. Remains to be seen, haven't yet performed my SAS. As far as the axle moving forward, I don't know that I could give you the "standard" or "recommended" amount, but the reasoning with most is uptravel on the 4wd IFS frame and clearance to the rear of the fender to fit larger tires.
Hopefully someone with better knowledge than me can chime in with numbers and a better explanation, but that seems to be the long and short of it.

I'm not going to do a pieced together swap. I'm going to buy a complete SAS kit so that I have everything for one lump sum. I think it will be easier that way. I just haven't figured out what kit I want to purchase. I still have several questions listed above that haven't been answered yet. So I'm still pondering on which kit I should buy.
I did receive my income tax refund today. So I went out and bought me a brand new Lincoln Pro-Mig 140 welder today. I picked it up for 530.00 bucks with my military discount. I haven't used it yet but I did assemble it. Im going to go tomorrow and buy a new bottle of gas.
I haven't took any pics yet due to bad weather. I'll try to post them tomorrow.

As far as the kits go, the cheapest is going to be Trail Gear. Their kit is available through many vendors, and the only bad stuff I've heard is that the rod ends and inner axle seals tend to go bad sooner than would be expected. The 3" kit has given some people more like 6" of lift after it's all said and done, but as the springs wear in they lower some. Far as I know, 35's will fit pretty easy with their 3" kit. The other complete kit i know of out there is from All Pro. Haven't heard as much about their kits, except that they use the same spring supplier that Marlin used to use, and I've heard more good things about Marlin's springs when they were available than Trail Gear's.

I still haven't got around to doing my SAS yet. However I wanted to update this thread with some pictures. These pictures are just to show how far I've brought my truck.
This is my truck when I first got it.
Yeah I know...... It looked like crap huh. Believe it or not I drove it like that up until 2008 when I changed the bed and painted it. Here's a couple of when I first had it painted.
Then in 2012 I started doing all my upgrades. Mainly because my obsession became worse and your guys rigs really inspired me. It all started with building a new bumper. Then that lead to rock sliders, small BJ lift, and so on. Here's a few more oddball pics to show the changes my truck has gone through
And here it is today. Tilt steering, bucket seats, wing glass doors, w56 tranny, SR5 cluster, and pretty much blacked out.

As I mentioned above, this is going to be a very slow build. However I got a update.

Started on my Donor 2wd frame. I have completely striped my frame down to bare metal. All the 2wd IFS crap is gone. Frame has been strip down and thoroughly cleaned with grinder/wire brush. Now all that's needed is paint and IFS eliminator kit welded on.

you did a great job on the front bumper and the aluminum flatbed is awesome in my book. I like the leds, and as for finding a bed in nebraska is hard to do without rust or all beat up.So your plans are too take the cab and bed off the truck and put it on the 2wd frame with a straight axle and you wanna run 35s or 37s?? Your welder will come in handy and it seems like you can weld so that will definetly be in your favor. I dont personally know if theres a difference in the 2wd to 4wd frame, youll need to swap your crossmember over for the transfercase and tranny. What gears you have?? I wouldnt go bigger than 35s

I welded for a living for 3.5 years until the company shut down. After that I got my contractors License and now do metal roofing/general remodeling.
Yeah my plans are to use my 87 cab. It's 100% flawless. No rust no were even floor boards still have the factory coating and copper paint on them.
As far as the bed. I dunno. I'm thinking I wanna run my flat bed but I guess we will see once I get there.
Gears are 4.88's someday it will be locked 5.27's
Engine is 22r that will also be swapped to 22re
Tires will defiantly be 35's although I have considered a 37.
There's a difference between 2wd and 4wd frames. The 2wd is shaped more like a 84-85 4wd frame. Although cab mounts and everything are the same.
Crossmember will also be swapped from my 4wd frame. I may make one I dunno yet.
I'm still debating on which kit to go with also.
It's a little hard to choose between 3" 4" or 5" springs. Also I'm unclear about HD springs or not. Someday I may ditch the 22r and drop in a 302

maybe 4" springs, whats the HD have more leaf packs or what? So if you wanna go with he 22re you will need the wiring harness ecm and alot of other crap too,

I have around 800 in it. It would cost about 1500-2000 to have one built. Mine was built by a couple buddies. It was built from scrap aluminum so it didn't cost me as much. They worked for a company that built trailers for rigs. That company is no longer around now tho. As far as I know mines the only one around. Never seen another like it.
