JDM4X4's 1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Build

So I just bought an '87 4runner 2 weeks ago and it's completely stock...for now. I use to have an '85 Pickup with a 5 inch lift on 34's and a weber carb, but I didn't build any of it I bought it like that. I'm really looking forward to this build it'll be the first time I've done this much work to a truck. I'll get pictures and a rough plan up as soon as I can.

First goal is to get it to pass emissions first. It's failed twice...keeping my fingers crossed for round 3.

What have you done to help pass smog? Where are you failing?

JDM4X4 11-25-2012 11:54 PM

It was like .5 grams per mile over the limit for NOX. I changed the spark plugs and wires after the first time, then if failed again. Now I have adjusted the timing, replaced the air filter, fuel filter and a couple of the vacuum lines. It is running a lot better now, I just haven't had time to get it tested again (I'm going on Tuesday). I also ran a compression test just to make sure i wasn't crazy uneven, it's a little low but it's pretty even.

How is the cat?

Triple check vacuum lines using fsm. I failed multiple times before figjring out my lines were messed up on egr system. Also check egr to ensure it is clean.

Good luck

i'll double check vacuum lines, cat is welded in so i didn't want to take it off yet.

Welded...yikes.

When I failed twice, I had replaced:
- Cat
- plugs
- cap/rotor
- wires
- cleaned air filter
- timing adjust
- cleaned EGR
- Replaces O2 sensor

After all that I was still failing. Looked at the FSM diagram for vacuum hoses and noticed I had hooked some up wrong when I last adjusted something - fixed and passed with flying colors.

Also, just check for vacuum leaks - you could have a leaky vacuum hose. spray wd40 around the hoses (gently) while idling...if idle rises when you do, that hose likely has a leak.

I'm planning on replacing the exhaust anyway. Thanks Phil I totally forgot about the wd40 trick. By the way where else can I find the FSM, I tried the link from the thread with all of them and it didn't work.

Try right clicking and saving this file - that's how I got mine (this is for an 88 but should be fine for you):

If that doesn't work, go to the source and right click on the same link:

Here's a photo I would have taken more today but things got a little crazy.

Goals for the near future:
Pass emissions (#1 priority, it's getting tested tomorrow)
Stop as much of the leaking as possible
Adjust valves
Replace exhaust/intake
Replace front coil springs, leaf springs and shocks
Tires
Clean the body up a little bit
And any other little things she throws at me

Long Term
build motor for supercharger on the side (10lbs)
re-gear diffs to 4.56
bumpers and sliders
rear disc brake conversion
Rims and tires possibly with spacers to get a wider stance.
soft top
interior (more details later)
marine grade sound system
transmission/t-case?
finishing touches on body (i.e. little to no rust, minimal dents/scratches and mostly
even paint)

it's gonna take some time, and money, and it will probably change at least 3 times, but that is the plan for now.

.43 grams per mile over....stupid emissions. However, I have decided to start getting the parts to swap my battery and intake locations.

Looks good. What kind of radiator is in there? I've never seen one like that in a first gen 4Runner before.

JDM4X4 11-28-2012 08:03 AM

PO replaced it. I think its just an oem one.

JDM4X4 12-05-2012 06:07 PM

sorry i haven't updated you guys in a couple of days, so i have all new vacuum lines, i adjusted the valves and i'll be changing the cat and egr valve soon. I am however debating on a rebuild...Thoughts? concerns, things to look out for?

JDM4X4 12-05-2012 06:09 PM

by the way no more supercharger in the long term plans...told you it would change.

JDM4X4 12-08-2012 09:40 PM

so the biggest hurdle right now is funding i have...so give me a minute and i might have some, lol.
