Paints done, needs a little touch-up here and there, but good enough for now.

Finally got the motor in. Took me all day yesterday. Bought the flywheel and clutch kit, as well as a 3.0 throwout bearing at my work. Would've went with the ORS clutch kit, but it's $300 as opposed to the ~$150 I spent on everything.

Good news is, it's in there and tranny bolted up no problem. Bad news is my Trailgear Motor mounts aren't lining up worth a crap. After doing some reading on em, I don't know if I still want to go with em. But thats for another thread in the 3.4 swap section.

Here are the pics

Thanks guys.

Yeah, after I searched on google, saw that just about everyone on pirate don't like em. But the reason I got em was because I wanted to see if it was true that you didn't need a body lift/hood scoop. http://www.dezertrangers.com/vb/truck-talk/177327.htm

aztoyman pointed out that they were backwards. So I'll be able to fix that pretty quick.

In other news, we are already lookin towards snow pretty soon. So I'll be lookin for another toyota to dd this winter. Right now, it might be a 4runner, since that's the only thing I can really afford that's 4WD and a Toyota. We'll see. Chevy K10 is goin to a buddy of mine that really loves it.

It's been a while, haven't really been able to save money for more stuff on the truck. In fact, I sold my chevy to my buddy who really wanted it. Ended picking up a '92 4runner for $600. It sat for 7 years, and even with my quick attempts to get it running, it wouldn't turn over, so I had to get it towed home. I bought it because looking at the body and frame, you wouldn't even think it sat for 7 years. Despite the Chevy being a great truck for me, gambling that it'll be perfectly fine this winter with it's tired motor and lack of 4WD, would be asking too much. Especially after everything it's already done for me. So my buddy who loves the crap out of it, will rebuild it completely.

I dropped the tank that night, and found an aftermarket pump that had gotten so hot, it melted the rubber bottom piece that helps hold the strainer. The strainer fell off, and the pump did a good job shoving a bunch of gunk into the fuel line.

She ran after that, but the power steering was toast, so I quickly replaced that cause the 4runner also has an ABS module on it. Then a quick change of oil, spark plugs, wires, and belts, she was pretty much good to go.

So the 4runner is my DD now, it's an automatic. There still is a couple problems I need to sort out.

1. Truck turns over awesome, but it won't idle that high on cold starts. It's fairly cold around here, and I've only got to run 1100 rpm at best. Cold start injector tested good on my multimeter. Air filter is new, and most of the hoses that had cracked, were replaced from the 3.0 ones on the other truck. Even the idle screw is almost maxed out.

2. When front driveshaft is put in, the truck won't move at all. Based on the basics of what I know about differentials, I'm thinking the pinion bearing is destroyed. I've tried to find the SST it states in the book, because it would be way easier to just unbolt the flange and take the old one out and put the new one in, without taking the whole assembly apart. So idk, gonna have to think about these things for little bit. Any input is appreciated.

Checked the AFM and TPS? Nice looking runner! Can you turn the pinion by hand?

Whats this SST for the pinion bearing your talking about? I dont think you can pull the pinion/bearing out from the flange side. Pretty easy to pop the front cover for a look inside for a better idea of what may be going on. And if you change the pinion bearing, youll need to set up the gear pattern again anyway..

3.4 in the truck is gonna be sweet too!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks man, here's an OTC Part # for the tool: 09556-22010-01

It would be really nice to have because it would let me not have to drop the front diff. Plus I've had my fair share of dropping these things, and I'm feelin lazy haha. I wondered why the previous owner disconnected the front driveshaft, so I put it in, and the 4runner wouldn't even move. My guess is bad maintenance because the I quickly checked the rear and it was really low on fluid. I added what I had, and will do a quick oil change on both when I get paid.

Haven't checked the AFM, and as for the TPS, I just decided to unplug and see what would happen, and nothing chenged. Didn't put a multimeter on it or anything though.

Can you turn the front pinion by hand? As in, can you feel that its frozen?

Maybe the front and rear gears are different ratios?

400 Clams! Daaaaaam. So would you re set up the gear pattern with the diff in the truck? Seems easier just to drop it anyway.

I tried turning it by hand, and it didn't budge. I'm assuming on these automatics that the transfer case is always being driven. And shifting to 4WD only activates the ADD. I'll try digging into it when I change the oil. It wouldn't hurt to loosen up the bolt and remove the pinion flange at this point anyways. I might even get lucky and the sucker might just come out by hand. We'll see when I get in there.

I'm dumb, I forgot I'm not dealing with manual hubs, when the 4runner is lifted off the ground it does spin freely, so it's not that. Must be the transfer case

I put started a new thread here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116.../#post52228566

The little things

Always end breaking these small bolts for the reservoir. Drilled and tapped that out.
Attachment 126563

Got the interior mostly back in after doing the tach resistor mod.
Attachment 126564
Attachment 126565

Finally got the idler pulley bracket on, and knock sensors.
Attachment 126566

Then injectors are put on halfway for now, just needs fuel rail bolts with spacers.

Just some more stuff little by little. Got the back part of the timing cover in, got the high pressure fuel line from ORS, got some used aisin hubs off ebay. One of them, I noticed, was locked up. So, I got in and took apart, cleaned it, greased it and used the other working one as reference to how the springs go in. Which is why it was locked up in the first place.

Attachment 126166
Attachment 126167

On the far left, you can see that the hub gear isn't connected to the cover plate, as opposed to the one in the middle. Disregard the auto hubs on the right.
Attachment 126168

Back together and works great. Now I gotta get the two gaskets and the two bolts for the cv axle. Then I can bolt them in for good.

Alright, so I got my wiring harness, time to label everything.

It's gonna be tricky to say the least lol. Really should have just got a donor vehicle.

Anyways here's what I'm gonna be working with.

'97 4Runner M/T ECU (it has the connectors too) with....
'04 Tacoma A/T Wiring Harness that's gonna be modified....a lot.

I spent most of tonight gathering info on the 2 dash harness connector wiring for my 1990. It's not much, but it helps me get started. I put them in a diagram so I'm not looking everywhere again. I can't guarantee its accuracy though.

Couple more Diagrams for the 2004 Taco Harness, These plugs are kind of the odd ones since they are scattered around the diagrams. I'll make up anoher diagram for the 3 main ECU connectors (E7, E8, E10) and then move on to making diagrams for the 98 4runner plugs, and then make a pinout combination chart.

And Finally the E7, E8, E10 Plugs on the '04 Tacoma w/ A/T Wiring Harness.

Attachment 126124

And the pinouts for the '97 4Runner M/T 4x4 ECM. E9, E10, E11, E12 Connectors.

Attachment 126125

Biggest thing I think is taking all the fly-by-wire stuff out and putting in the old stuff.

Awesome build! Looking forward to seeing how the wiring turns out for the new motor. Also what led to the decision to go with the LT suspension kit vs. doing an SAS swap? Sorry if already answered but assuming it comes down to what you mainly are using it for.
