3.slow mileage
The counter gear was 232$ and the smaller top gear was 34$. A little pricy but it is seeming to pay off. Did around 400 miles this past weekend, one tank averaged 17.5 cruising at 77mph. The second tank cruising around 75mph averaged 18.6. Mpg. So those numbers are slightly better than the old 3.0 ever got. I will know soon what mixed City gets me.
On that gear, was there something special about that red shift fork? Or was it needed because of the actual gear size?

The red fork is the heavy duty Marlin crawler one. The first gear shift fork tends to wear out on these transmissions producing the "popping out of first gear". So I went with it to see if it lasts longer. It does have a larger contact surface and I can see it lasting better.

thanks man, I did read a lot of your posts before I went with this swap. There are tons of great stuff on this forum. I have been using my rig as a daily summer driver for the past three years with no major issues. I think I have around 30k miles on it.

Still got this thing?
Was researching 1uz swaps and remembered this thread. Love how you swapped the 5th gear for more overdrive.

Thanks man, it was an awesome project, still driving it around in the summers as a daily driver.

That's awesome.
Would you do anything different if you were to do it again?
What's your winter rig?

I would make sure the frame was not so rusty 😂. But seriously the only thing I would do different is maybe do a 1-2" body lift. This would allow me to push the engine and transmission back maybe an 1" for more room up front. I do struggle from time to time with overheating, still even after putting in a duel 1" core aluminum radiator with three fans on it. I would say between the fans and the engine I only have 0.5" Max, and on the back you can see it rubs the fire wall. Been thinking of putting a hood scoop and or louvered vents in the hood to let the heat escape. I do wish I new more about ignition systems, would be cool to get rid of the distributors, I feel like the engine could benefit from someone who knows how to tune with a stand alone computer. Maybe add a supercharger, but the overheating has me holding off on that a bit.
Oh yeah, the winter rig is a 2016 Tacoma 4x4 TRD, not as fun as the summer rig.

Ha!
That makes sense.
Sounds like a super tight fit.
Nice winter rig.
Also, I looked up the gears for the 5th gear swap and it looks like they are discontinued. But I found a thread on Pirate that is about the swap with many more details. I haven't read the whole thing closely yet.

Thanks for the link, that's a good compiling of all the data I found when I was researching it. I remember seeing all those pictures but not sure where I initially found all the information. I see that getting these gears is getting a little harder.

Back with a question about the 5th gear swap.
You successfully swapped the 5th gear on a pre 95 r150? With those part numbers?
I looked closely and see the nut holding the 5th gear on unlike the post 95 r150 trans.

Yes it was a 1994 transmission, those part numbers will not work on the 95 and up.

Awesome!
Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it.
Unfortunately the counter gear is no longer available... Ugh!

Such a bummer.
Did you take any pictures of the bottom of the gear?
There are later model counter gears still available and I am curious how they are different from the pre 95 counter gears? They look the same from the top picture.
Later model gear:
Edit: I can see a slight difference in the number of "teeth" on the center.
