'94 daily driver pickup rebuild
 

My truck is a '94 2wd 22re 5spd. The PO took decent care of it and I picked it up for $1500 at 195k. Now it's at 210k and my timing chain tensioner and guide came apart and my oil was filled with both grey and brass metal shavings and plastic pieces. It's been really good to me so I'm planning to go through the motor completely and breathe some new life into it. I tore into it today to find the problem, and I hope to have the motor out next week and assess the damage and order parts. I'm thinking of boring it over but it will all depend on if it meets specs when I check everything. I can't find my service manuals at the moment so I've just been doing the obvious things, but I should be in full force when I find them. I'll post pics to show what I've done so far and get some feed back, I know there are a lot of knowledgeable people on here. I'm no stranger to engines nor Toyotas, but this is my first Toyota rebuild so any guidance would be great. Thanks guys!

Here it is after and during the bed swap. I had the shell on and off for a while. I bought a pickup bed trailer with a good bed, axle, topper, and 3 new tires for $200. I swapped the beds so the trailer now has the dented one. Anyway, enough off topic stuff, I should be tearing into the truck pretty hard this weekend.

Okay, so I know it's been a while but I had issues with the vehicles I had to switch over to, and I had to make a trip to Kansas for a couple days. The motor is free and ready to come out tomorrow. I was going to rent a cherry picker, but I think I'll just use a tree and my good come-a-long. I left the lower intake manifold on the motor, was that a bad idea?

Just want to add that I was kind of concerned about how I would remove the crank pulley bolt after seeing some other guy's posts, but I was really lucky and got mine first try with an SAE 12 point wrench. Wrong tool to use I know, so I didn't use very much torque and it came right off. Good thing I tried before I went and bought the socket. (I'm probably going to have to buy it anyway).

Offtopic, but I also found this today on my '83. I haven't it but a month or two and I drove it for 2 weeks straight after the '94 blew up, until it blew the exhaust off behind the header and the starter bolts vibrated out. The PO bought it without a tranny and I was told he put one in out of a similar 2wd, and that he had just replaced starter and alternator. Well when I went to put bolts back into the starter today I found these issues with the tranny install. I'm thinking I will double check a few more things on this truck now. If the picture isnt clear enough, those are the bolts between the bellhousing and motor, one side has a stack of oversized crooked washers, and the other side has no bolt whatsoever.

I was waiting on a friend to get off work so I could borrow his cherry picker, so I removed the lower intake manifold.

I also removed the water pump and some front brackets.

Then I was still waiting so I removed the exhaust manifold.

Nice looking truck you got. I do pull my motors out with the intake on. When you install one, you can install it with the injectors in and motor mostly reassembled if you just disconnect the injector harness thru the firewall.

I am about a 100 south of you, but you have a couple of salvage yards in your area that I like to go to. Buddy U Pull it is great and I cant think of the name of the other one but it is in Nixa and he has tons of Toyota trucks.

On a two wheel drive, I find it about as easy to just pull the motor and tranny in one piece. Welcome to the world of people stacking washers and all kinds of hack jobs. Looking forward to your build.

Thanks Terry, and I try to make as many trips to Buddy's as possible. They seem to have more yotas than the other self service yards. I believe the one in Nixa is B&B import salvage? I bought my back glass there. Also I want to reassemble as much of the motor as possible in the garage on the stand, so I will probably do as you said with the wiring harness.

Dirty dirty.....the spacers on the stand were too long for my bolts. I had to cut them down.

I even numbered the head bolts with a center punch to be sure they go back in the original order.

This is the head where the cam journals ride. I think it could look a little better, but I checked it with Plastigauge and it was within specs.

Crankshaft and cam were both borderline within specs on journal diameter, but the clearance was good and should be even better with new bearings so I'm not going to worry about it.

I don't have any pics of the block, but It's a little too out of round and too tapered, so I'm having it bored .020 over by the O'rielly's machine shop.

My main bearings are pretty rough. I'll post more soon of my semi-cleaned engine parts and my clean engine bay. I'm waiting for pistons to get here before dropping the block off, that way they can bore it to exact measurement. Thanks for looking!

B&B was the name I was trying to think of. I would watch how much machine work the head may need. You can get an entire new head for about $250. First motor I did I spent $210 on a head, wish I would of known that I could of bought a new head then.

I didn't work on this today, and probably won't for a few days until I get more parts in. Here are a few little things I did yesterday.

Spent two hours with a bucket of Dawn dish soap water and rags washing the engine bay.

Then I painted the lower part of the firewall that only had overspray from the factory. I figured spray paint would be fine under the hood out of the weather. It actually matched fairly well.

Undercoated my frame with bedliner after I washed it.

I also washed and touched up the underside of my hood.

Your engine bay cleaned up nice and is looking better.
